Boucher, 18, was drafted in the fourth round (99th overall) by the Devils during the 2011 entry draft.
The signing comes one day after Kelly Zajac was signed to an amateur tryout contract with Albany (AHL). Both will play Friday night for Albany, as well as in the following two games.
He can play in the AHL because his junior team's season is done. He's just going to play the rest of Albany's season to get a taste of the pro game, and then probably go back to juniors next year. Nothing wrong with giving the kid a cup of coffee coming off an impressive season.

What if he is good enough to play in the AHL next year? Is he eligible?

I'm not sure. His CHL rights are owned by Sarnia, but technically at the time he was drafted, he was playing in the USHL, and the CHL-AHL agreement doesn't cover that. Not sure if the age limit applies in that case.
Honestly, I don't think the issue will come up. We'll probably send him back to the OHL anyway.

Since Reid was drafted out of the USHL, he'd be eligible to play in the AHL next season. Jeremy Morin followed a similar path--drafted out of the USHL in 2009, played in the OHL in 2009-10, played in the AHL in 2010-11.

I also would be surprised if they rushed Boucher into the pros. He won't turn 19 until September and he's essentially finishing his senior year of high school right now.
I live in Sarnia, he had a good year for the Sting, the team made the playoffs after missing for 3 straight years but ran into some bad luck with injuries and lost in the 1st round
Yakupov will be in the nhl next season so Reid will probably be playing on the Stings first line

Thats good to hear that since Yakupov will be in the NHL next season that Reid will be getting top line minutes in junior to develop his game.

Are the Sykora comparisons accurate? By that I mean a hell of a shot, but marginal in every other aspect?

Hopefully Galchenyuk stays in the O for another year and Boucher plays with him.
I'm gonna try to follow this guy, as he's the first potential Devil that's my age. If he succeeds in the NHL, I'll live vicariously through his achievements.

Corrente is that guy for me ;_;
Although I suppose you could say Zharkov too. Same draft year.

I think Reid is a better skater than Sykora but it's a pretty fair comparison. He skates around alot, really shifty, he's always looking to get open and before you know he has the puck on his stick he gets it on net with his quick release. I mean very quick, you blink you miss it.
