Top 5 pick could contribute as soon as next season.
Last draft:
1st overall: RNH - Stepped in right away
2nd overall: Landeskog - Stepped in right away
3rd overall - Huberdeau - Strong chance of stepping in next season
4th overall - Larsson - Stepped in right away
5th overall - Ryan Strome - Good chance of stepping in next season
6th overall - Zibanejad - Will come over next season
7th overall - Scheifele - Good chance of stepping in next season
8th overall - Couturier- Stepped in right away
By next season, I wouldn't be surprised to see the entire top 10 from 2011 in the NHL, with perhaps the exception of Brodin. With our pick sitting 5th, there's a great chance we get a kid that's ready to contribute within two years.
He'll keep it. Hopefully he's learning from past mistakes.
I fear its previous mistakes and team failures, in addition to mounting pressure to deliver playoffs, that will in fact increase the odds the pick is dealt for instant help for next year and beyond.
Next year is "Playoffs or Burke" in Toronto and the player selected with the pick might not arrive on the scene to change Leafs fortunes until after the GM is replaced without team success next season.
Therefore this pick is the best asset (along with Jake Gardiner) that the GM has at his disposal in order to bring change and impact next years results. If he wants to acquire a top line center for next year he is going to have to be willing to part with assets to make it happen.

I know that Toronto's odds for winning the lottery were low to begin with, but now that we know for sure we will be drafting #5 will Burke deal the pick? If there is no chance to get Yakupov, Grigorenko or Galchenyuk (which will most likely happen) as they will be drafted 1,2,3... Does Burke try to move the pick? I don't see him drafting Forsberg whatsoever.
Any chance that he packages the pick with other assets to try to land that established big #1 C or a player like Nash?
If he does package the pick, who would you package it with and for who? What do you guys think!
If Galy falls to the fifth pick and the combine proves that there are questions about his knee I could see Burke trading down. Or if there's a decent way to trade up that doesn't cost the moon he does it but I'm content with him holding the fifth pick.
I don't see the player that Toronto wants in a trade being available that won't cost the farm and begone before the next crop comes in.

last years draft and this years draft is apples to oranges...
i don't get the fascination Leaf Nation has with picks... Look at all the top 5 busts over the past 10 years!!! I'll take a proven 40G player any day of the week!!!
THIS DRAFT IS ONE OF THE WEAKEST IN NHL HISTORY
Am i the only one who feels that Nash would be a steel for that pick?
1. he wants to play here
2. he is a top 5 PF in the world
3. he has championship pedigree
4. scored 40g multiple times
5. is a proven captain and leader
6. still young (27)
7. was a 1st OVERALL pick
8. has size
9. top 20 in the world in skill
10. local kid that knows the pressure in T.O
I feel fairly confident that he won't move it in the sense that he takes himself out of the draft. I.e. the 5th in a deal for Rick Nash.
It's certainly possible, but I'm leaning towards him keeping it. He's too close to the 1st overall to move it.
Even when he made the moves involving our first round picks for Kessel he admitted he didn't expect them to land as high as they did (even if he stated 'He'd do the deal again').
So I'm guessing he keeps this one around. He'd be run out of town if he traded another lottery pick (this time knowingly so) with the current state of the team.
Start by learning English , then learn about hockey . To the others who responded it was only a month ago that Gaunce was ranked the # 3 center in the draft , by bigger I was referring to the 20 pounds he has on the other 2 and the way he uses it .
If a top line center OR a franchise goalie is available with a package involving that pick, he will probably move it.
But it will be a long shot.
What I will say is that he'd be stupid not to entertain offers for it and at least put it into play and see what the market is like; but I'm sure he already is doing that.

This was said about last year's draft, as well as the year before that.
Does Nash address any of our main needs (#1 C, #1 D, #1 Goalie)?
If the answer is No, then Nash is a luxury, not a necessity. And a 7.8 million/year luxury at that.
What would the leafs want for their #5 pick? Do the habs have anything that might interest them? Price is off limits of course!
If it doesn't address #1 center, or upgraded goalie, then the #5 pick is not in play.
From a MTL perspective, other than Price (which you've already qualified), there's nothing that MTL could offer that would encourage Burke to consider moving the pick. PK Subban included
The top 10 in this draft are very strong players.... After that it's a significant drop. This years draft just doesn't have a sure #2... After Nail players drafted #2-#7 are potential stars to second line players depending on their development.
