Making Toronto a playoff team

------------------------------
Tor
Couturier

Philly
5th overall pick + 3rd round pick 2012
-------------------------------
and
-------------------------------
Tor
Jordan Staal

Pittsburgh
Joffery Lupul
--------------------------------
***Both Lupul and Staal's contracts end next season. Staal is rfa and lupul is ufa. Gives crosby his own top 6 winger and malkin sticks with neal.
----------------------------------------------
Tor
Marc Staal

NYR
1st 2013 + Luke Schenn + Percy
----------------------------------------------
Then hope we add Justin Schultz in FA.

What do you think of these trades?

Kadri/Grabovski - J. Staal - Kessel
Kulemin - Couturier - Grabovski
Frattin - Bozak - Connolly/MacA
Ross/Lombardi - Steckel - Brown

Phaneuf - M. Staal
Liles - Franson
Gardiner - Schultz

Reimer
FA vet.

Oh no...

Philly fans have already turned down Couturier for the 5th overall in the other thread.

No way Pittsburgh takes that risk. Joffrey could be a one season wonder, while Staal is already a proven to be a good 3rd/2nd line centre and is part of their core. Besides, I like Lupul, he and Kessel compliment each other well.

I'm not to sure the Rangers would like trading Staal for Schenn and a couple of unknowns. I'm also sick of the Leafs trading firsts.

makes us arguably worse ... we get rid of a PPG forward

and lose 2 early 1sts.

Did you just compare Lupul to Staal?

Lupul will not land you Staal, Couturier is a core piece to Philly's lineup and I think the Rangers will take that deal and run... Leafs aren't even a playoff team even after these trades..

Looks like they were no good. Might as well close this thread due to the consensus. I just thought the leafs would be better as we'd get 2 two way centers who will be with the team for many years. Then in 2013 summer we can go after free agents with all the expiring contracts. It would set us up pretty good for that year.

Those 3 players would change most teams in the NHL but you are giving up absolutely nothing to get them. A UFA in Lupul for a Selke candidate RFA in Staal. Please.

All of the teams you try to trade with are looking to compete. Why would they trade their players for lesser players and picks?

If it was that easy to make Toronto a playoff team, don't you think Burke would have done it already?

Read my last post. I admit it was pretty bad.... No need to say it over and over again.

264 GA (aka 25 more than the Oilers). Fix this and I could see you sneaking in to 8th in the next few.

Possibly, although the problems may run deeper than that. Kipper? Luongo? They will cost assets. What would Phion do if he was GM for a day...

Yup. Looked at the list and went "where's the goalie?" Toronto with a good goalie is a playoff team. Something like Luongo did for a lackluster roster in Vancouver in 2006-2007, though even getting middle of the pack goaltending would be good enough for Toronto.

this is a good point. the Leafs need to find teams looking to rebuild or change their identity, those are the teams that will be more willing to move roster players. they should also look into some reclamation projects of guys that used to be pretty good prospects/plays a year or 2 ago and have since fallen off the map.

honestly as a 3rd party observer that doesn't have an irrational hate towards the Leafs I don't think the values are that far off to be honest, just a poor selection of trading partners.

As I mentioned above I would look at teams looking to make a dramatic change. So If I were the Leafs I would target the Sabres, Flames, Hurricanes, Avalanche, Oilers, Islanders, Sharks and Capitals (there may be others but those are the ones I come up with off the top of my head).

Honestly I think a reclamation type move might be good too. For example Zach Boychuk in Carolina, I get the impression his value has dropped significantly in the last year or two, he is still young and has always been an extremely hard worker so he is a guy I would think is worth taking a flyer on. Pajaarvi in Edmonton is another possibility IMO.

Another idea is those bad or "untradable" contracts everyone complains about. Why not trade a bad contract for a bad contract? By all accounts Komisarek has been a bust in Toronto and Horcoff hasn't lived up to his contract in Edmonton. The Oilers could use a gritty defenseman and the Leafs could use some veteran leadership up front. Not saying this example is a great one, but the concept is something to look into IMO.

Then of course there is the more obvious and often visited ideas like Kiprusoff to Toronto, I think everyone agrees it would be a good fit, just no one can agree on value.

Lastly there is free agency. You won't get a #1 center on the market but you could get a goaltender and some guys to provide solid leadership.

All these trades an Toronto still relies on Reimer to be #1 goalie.

This makes the Leafs better at centre and probably gives them the depth to have the offense to get close. But they would still give up Top 10 in Worst Goals Against.

A steady tender with a .910 save percentage and a sub 2.50 GAA would get the Leafs a lot further

Getting rid of the poor leadership of Phaneuf should be phase one.

Burke will trade for his #1C. They're not available, but he'll trade for one.

Staal for Lupul seems unlikely and I don't even have an opinion on Couturier, I want to nitpick a small detail at the end of all this nonsense.

How does an overhaul proposal involve adding a specific college free agent as a 6th defenseman?

This is like saying you're planning massive renovations on your house, knocking down walls, adding two extra rooms, re-doing the kitchen floor, redoing the tile in one of the bathrooms, and also getting new throw pillows for the couch.

Even after this overhaul, the defense and goaltending are bad.

Are you saying that he'll trade for someone that isn't a 1C, but he'll claim that the player is?

Changed your mind I see. Wasn't it just last week you said the Leafs aren't in a position to be giving up assets for a goalie?
