I know it's your act to be counter-popular opinion on this board, but you're wrong in this case. The league's been trying to crack down on headshots for a few seasons now. Weber literally takes Zetterberg's head and slams it into the glass. Regardless of whether or not Zetterberg was hurt, the league is essentially saying that this type of behavior isn't suspension-worthy. $2,500 is nothing to a pro athlete. That's not the message that should've been sent.
If it had been some scrub, he would've been suspended.
I know it's your act to try to discredit another person's opinion by saying they "have an act," but you're wrong in this case.
He didn't slam Zetterberg's head hard
If he did, Zetterberg would be in a world of hurt. Zetterberg went down and stayed down trying to get the call, IMO. Because he didn't look groggy when he got up.
I wouldn't have been surprised to see him get a game. But I'm not surprised he didn't, either, because this was an inconsequential event.
Not surprised at all. The NHL is a reactionary league, if Zetterberg had *truly* embellished and laid spasming on the ice for 10 minutes and brought to hospital, Weber probably would have gotten two or three games.
Z looked OK, it's the playoffs, they don't want to help decide a series via suspension, a fine was what I expected.
I am curious to see if this was bad enough in hockey circles that Weber will honor answering for it. I really doubt it, but would love to see Big E jump him in the next game.
The slashed stick thing is something that was called all year. The players were perfectly right in expecting it to be called, and wondering why it wasn't. They should be calling the refs attention to it.
Expecting it to be called is one thing.
Raising your hand in the air while the play is still going on is another.
You can spend your time getting the ref's attention or you can play hockey.
Eh, I think it was plenty hard, just poorly aimed (thankfully, for Z). I think what was so glaring about it was that it wasn't a hockey play, at all. He didn't miss on a hit, Z didn't make a sudden turn and get caught by an elbow, Weber pulled back and threw two hard shots at the back of Zetterberg's head. While Z didn't get hurt, that's also not something you want to become common in every game, or someone is going to get seriously hurt.
Agree about someone going out and returning the favor at some point, though. If the league's not going to do it, someone does. I'd run the Kostitsyn's, though. I think they can be taken off their games.
If the league isn't going to do anything about it the Wings need to do something that. If that was a Bruin he did it to he'd have Chara, Thornton, Lucic and Campbell all over him just waiting to rip him apart. Sometimes you need to stop waiting for the call and the league to do something and return the favor. It's quite obvious that they aren't calling things so why not return the favor. I'm tired of the Wings trying to be the nice guy and just draw the penalty. But for Christ sake, have some pride and push back once in a while. I mean the Preds now know they can run guys and no one will respond and that doesn't bode well for the Wings.

But don't they also decide it by not enforcing the rules? If they have a standard for headshots but then allow them is that also deciding the games by permitting rule violations?
Should we allow someone to drag Rinne out of the net and then take a shot on goal just because we don't want the officials deciding the game?
I expected Shanny to be spineless, but it doesn't make it right.
Weber makes $7.5M. So $2,500/7,500,000=.000333
that's .03% of his pay
So say some dude walking down the street is making $40k/yr. An equivalent fine for him would be about $13.
When you put it like that, the fine IS a joke.

Since Emmerton is useless, next game he should rock bottom or sharp shooter someone of importance on the preds lol
he is such a panzi though he probably won't be able to do it to anyone meaningful though
I'm thinking perhaps a Stone Cold Stunner to Weber should do it. And maybe some Sweet Chin Music to Rinne. He has a mask, he can take it.
Without a stick. For some reason, I think they can do both as they go to the bench to get new, um, carbon. heh.
Yes. Without a stick.
If they play is still going in your proximity, you've got a job to do.
And it's not just the stick slashing. White and Lidstrom both raised their hands when Erat grabbed White's arm and White went down. If the ref decides not to call that, that split second of whining to the ref might be the difference between someone getting a shot to break up that play before it's an empty net goal or not.
It's not easy to keep playing after a foul. But players with discipline do it. Players who throw their heads back and try to draw calls, to me, don't have their focus in the right place.
Typically, the Wings have that discipline. But last night they were definitely trying to draw calls.
And that's one of the traits I despise in the Sedins and the Canucks.
Just going to throw this out there but can you imagine if Giroux did this to Crosby at the end of the game?
The league has set a bad precident in my opinion. Didn't really expect the fine and a lot of post-season games end with cheap shenanigans, but you have opened the door to it. There is no reason why you wouldn't pay Weber back, the Wings aren't that kind of team but $2500 to do what he did, is not steep enough. They need to make the fines stiffer in the next CBA.

Bert did push back, but the other guys on the ice were, who? Dats, Franzen, Lids, white? Dropping gloves and throwing punches just isn't something those guys normally do. And I'm fine with that, it's not their game, it's not what they're there for.
I don't really disagree with you in principal. The Wings need to come out and push back the next game. I doubt anyone will challenge Weber to a fight (or that he'd necessarily take anyone up on it - why would he?), though, and if they want any real retribution, it'll wait until the regular season.

I agree the Kostitsyn's can be taken off their game but ultimately they can be kept in check anyways (at least they were last night). I say some runs Rinne. based on the liberties that were being taken on Zetterberg and Datsyuk last night apparently nashville has no problem going after the Wings stars. I say star for star. let Emmerton bulldoze Rinne.

I have heard that argument a few times, and as someone that has been hit in the face with a stick and an elbow or two, I have to say that the natural reaction is to pull your head back quickly away from the intruding object. It's kind of a survival instinct.
As for the wings trying to draw calls last night, I agree that they did later on in the game and I would call that an adjustment to the conditions of the game. It was so poorly officiated that you would be negligent to your team if you didn't call attention to the infractions. Normally I would agree with you but last night was not a normal game.
huhuhu. No suspension for that ugly stuff, Now they can go berserk next game, why not bring knifes Shanny? It should be okay. Weber is a weak doing that, especially when winning. Looser!

Blues fan here. I hate you guys on principle, but that should have been a suspension. shanny is a joke. Since wrestling moves are now permitted in the NHL, can Dats climb the glass and elbow drop someone next game.

And how many goals were scored because of this?
You don't like it, for whatever reasons. They were still perfectly right in doing it, and it didn't negatively affect the play outside of them no longer having a stick.
Shanahan is nothing more than a league hack who doles out whatever punishments the league hands down for him to mete out. No balls, no guts. Shanny you are a panty-waste.
Guys I know we cracked down hard in the regular season but feel free to play more dangerously now, don't worry too much about injuring guys, because playoff games are too valuable to suspend you from so the worst you're going to lose is 0.03% of your salary.

He absolutely can, provided he starts going by Pavel "the Russian Bear" Datsyuk, enters the rink wearing a Russian Cossack hat and waving the Soviet flag, and has Ivan Koloff in his corner (or behind the Wings bench). I'm all for it!!

I would love to see somebody mockingly do that during warm-ups for the first game in Detroit. The league needs to be mocked after that one.
