If Smyth brings so much leadership, why has he never been a captain?
lmao! captain canada never been a captain, are you to young or never watching your national team playing the world cup before? i think he have some sort of a record of serving as a captain for team canada.

Ya really, and all I've seen from him this year is half hearted effort along with some stupid penalties. Face it people, Smytty is done and if they sign him he is only holding this team back. I wouldn't want him on the team for free right now, let alone pay him some absurd amount of money.
I really hope Calgary offers him so much he can't refuse.
I'm not Pro or anti Smyth, but if your a leader, why do you need a letter to highlight that your a leader?
Horcoff has a C, but it doesn't stop him from being one of the worst captains in the NHL.
I think Moreau was the one who said a captain's duties extend off the ice, maybe Smyth didn't want that extra stuff. I remember it had to do with getting the right hotel and such.
I'd insist on a 1 year deal, and leave it as my final offer. We have too many important contracts coming up to guarantee cap space to a player who's game could fall off at any moment.

Aaaarrrrgh. I had to turn it off after 30 seconds because of the horrific music accompaniment. Damn.
Thank you. Gaaaaa. WTF.
If I was a star hockey player I'd want that sonic drivel removed from youtube lest there ever be any remaining association with me ever. Then I'd rinse out my mouth with pinesol..
Smyth will get what he wants. Katz told him so when he came back.
To those who think Horcoff gets sent to the minors. You relize he lives next door to Katz right. Never going to happen.
In summary - Katz must then have his priorities messed up, h'e'll never entertain the thought of a playing in a winning environment because the sack of patatoes that he is employs is his neighbor and is scared to hurt his feelings
As far as Smyth is concerned., please release him, why even make him an offer?
These are the worst 2 (vets) aging achors prolonging the development of this team

Hi friend, I wish I was still young. Smyth has never been a captain in Edmonton to a group of people that know him well. There must be something to that. I couldn't give a rats ass about "captain Canada".
No need for 3 year contracts. IMHO, they can give him 3.5 million this year. Then 2 next year. 1M the year after. But it has to be 1 year contracts. If he wants a long-term, than he really is not a good fit and they should just find a competent veteran bottom 6-er on the cheap in the off-season.
I honestly don't get the obsession with one year contracts on this board. It is not the end of the world to sign him to three years, that is the only way to keep the cap hit really low. If a player gets hurt he sits on the DL. It is not big deal. Smyth at a cap hit of 2 mill or less is always going to be a good deal. Come on 2 mill is peanuts, the guy is worth that if he does nothing else other then mentor the kids and pot 15 goals.

Hey - is he too old to give a 3 year frontloaded contract? Like 4, 3, 2 breakdown? Cap hit of 3, he gets paid and the longevity he wanted, we get the cap space we want...
My two cents? Is he looking for a NMC/NTC or is he looking for a guaranteed spot in the organization after his career is through...?

It's not as simple as that.
In the next 3 years, we have to sign RNH, Eberle, Hall, Petry, and Smid.
Currently our 5 most promising players. Lets say he wants $2.5M/yr cap hit for those 3 years. For the most part, that cap hit will continue to count against the cap.
That means, no matter if his play falls off a cliff, or he calls it quits or whatever, we will have a $2.5M cap hit.
Now it may seem like nothing, but consider that we have Horcoff at 5.5M locked in for those 3 years. Add in that if Eberle, Hall and RNH progress at the rate that they have been, they'll all demand 6+ M caphit type deals.
From an organizational standpoint, it makes no sense to invest extra risk to an aging player like Smyth. Especially with the dramatic decline in his play in the 2nd half offensively.
On the other hand, 1 year deals give the organization assurance that the cap space won't be an issue and we pay Smyth for what he's worth.
This organization, considering the contracts that are coming up, makes no sense to invest into Smyth more than one year at a time.
Great, I can just see another teary-eyed press conference where he cries about how much he wanted to stay but big, bad Oilers management just wouldn't cave into his contract demands.
Further proof that Smyth is all about the money, money, money.
Just brings me back to a point I made a long time ago. I can understand him being upset at being traded, but if he REALLY wanted to come back, he wouldn't have signed with Colorado.

No No, it is called the LTIR, really it has been done like a dozen times at least already. IF a player gets hurt he doesn't count against the cap. Every one knows the deal.
If he wants 2.5 for 3 years he can walk. At 2 mill per year how is that going to stop us from signing any one? That is the point, that is peanuts. We aren't talking Horcoff 5.5 mill here, we are talking 2 mill.
for the record I think the issue with horcoff is we didn't sign him long enough. If you are going to lock a guy up you may as well lock him up untill retirement. If we locked up Horc for 4 more years at a really low salary for the final 4 years of the deal, yes, untill he is 40, his cap hit would be more like 3.5 mill. Sill ugly, but all and all it would be a better situation.
The thing is every one criticizes me like I am crazy but that is what every GM in the league does. If you are going to lock some one up, you do it until retirement, Sedins, Kovy, ect ect ect, the list goes on. That is how you keep a cap low so you can sign guys like Hall, Nuge, Eberle ect....

I was thinking of a 3/2/1M for 3 years a 2 M cap hit. But he has to accept yeoman work, pk, bottom minutes, checking assignments ect. The gravy days are over

Actually I wouldnt mind signing him to a Recchi deal....or Crosby
get injured sit out until the playoffs....own in the playoffs....retire.
Whoa... Smyth wanting more money/term than the Oilers want to pay him?
An utterly stunning development!
I remember all the hand-wringing by Oiler fans when the trade talks dragged out last summer over the fear he might end up in Calgary, would be hilarious if it actually happened now.
If Smyth thinks he's entitled to a long term deal then he can gtfo. Tambi doesn't owe him anything. He did a favor by trading for him in the first place. It's not like this team needs him either.
Seems like the farther along we go from 2006, the less of a legacy Smyth has.
I think he tried this year and his compete level was one of the best for the vets, but he's been more about grit and heart than skill, and he just looks old and slow to me.
I don't know if I can watch another 2years of offsides and passes in the skates.
