It's about time. If Sutter didn't agree to a mutual parting I think he probably would have been fired anyway. After leaving New Jersey and going to Calgary he never had success like he was previously used to. He did have a pretty decent roster to work with but his style worked so much better for the Devils. Now the Sutter's are finally completely out of Calgary, every last one of them; that has to be a good thing for Flames fans.
Change is hopefully coming in Calgary. Another season and not making the playoffs means some major changes need to happen and usually the coach is always first. Feaster could be on the hot seat now. I'm sure they'll be thinking about what to do with him as well as some of the players. It may be best to clean house not only with coaches and management, but with the roster too.
I'm happy because I think this is the sign of a tanking strategy. Honestly, it was probably Sutter's system that kept them competitive (hence around 90pts each year). They would be competing for the lottery without him. My guess is they struggle to shake their previous identity a la Montreal this year and do just that. I just hope MacKinnon or Seth Jones don't end up in their hands...
not really they still didn't get out of the 1st round before. not much success if you ask me
I agree they didn't go far enough but the fact they took a step back under Sutter says he wasn't a fit at all. Keenan's team were brutalized by injuries and yet the team still made the playoffs and were competitive in the first round. I hate Keenan but he was able to get much more out of his team.
Please No. Here's to hoping that they get a more offensive minded coach who doesn't play a tight system. I don't care if the coach is any good, I just want good hockey, hire Ron Wilson or someone.
I don't know what to think about this. In my opinion the biggest problem with the flames is, aside from two or three players, each player falls into one of three categories: underachiever, disinterested or lack of skill. Coaching has a bit to do with it but if this isn't supplemented with roster changes then the direction of this team is straight down.
Oh and if Ron Wilson is somehow hired as the new coach I will quit watching sports.
"Not on board with the direction of the team"... given that Calgary has been about as directionless a team as there could be in the past few seasons, could this mean Feaster has finally started to think about going through a more "traditional" rebuild?
Quite the opposite actually. It was Sutter that wanted to rebuild. Feaster has said he wants to retool and make the playoffs next season.
The Flames needed to this to happen to be able to progress.
I think the Flames should tank next year. Do it and get it over with and draft the next superstar. Trade Iginla and Kipper and snag some more first round picks. The draft of 2013 is supposedly fairly deep. A good draft will help them immensely.
If they get a first rounder, and a good prospect for Iginla they'll be laughing.

Of course there will be roster changes. Just don't expect Iginla or Kiprusoff to be part of those changes.
Paraphrasing, but just a few days ago Brent said he'd love to return to the Flames and that he'd absolutely coach a "rebuilding" team. He said if he were to return though, things would have to be different and he'd do things differently, and some of those things may not be interpreted as "nice".
To me, this looks like Jay/ownership didn't agree with what Brent wanted to change - so they decided to split ways (Brent's contract expired, he wasn't fired).
Has nothing to do with Jay. I believe Jay believes in a rebuild, hence his mid-game "fool me once" rant. Sutter wants the rebuild too. What he doesn't want it to try to coach this uncoachable group again. Today happened because owner Murray Edwards via Ken King reconfirmed that Iggy isn't going anywhere. Jay breaks news to Sutter, Sutter says ok, I'm gone. Jay has to announce to press. Makes it VERY clear that players (Iggy) will have NO say in hiring of new coach. To me, clearly a show of his support for Sutter and for change (and frustration). Unfortunately, Murray Edwards via Ken King will have a say on the new coach. Will be entertaining when Iggy sees public sentiment in Calgary has shifted away from him and he asks to be moved anyway.
Was it ever explicitly stated that Sutter wanted to rebuild?
He didn't state that but he did say that he'd have no issue whatsoever with coaching through a rebuild (he said this on Tuesday).
I think the poster that made mention of the Edwards issue is right on the money. If you listen to a lot of what Feaster has been saying he's been hinting at a rebuild but it seems like he's been rebuffed. I like a lot of what Feaster has done but I really do wonder if his hands are being tied.
Something like this wouldn't have happened under Hotchkiss' watch
