He would be really good here. If nothing else we would be way harder to play against and guys like Eager and Hordichuck, Peckham, Sutton ETC would have the leash removed and start playing with that element of crazy and physicality that they could never play under Renney. These guys all were hard to play against and were physical and stuck up for there teammates until they came here and played under Renney who neutered them. I want it to be known around the league that you can't come into Rexall and land kill shots on the Oilers meal tickets and not have some form of response. We need to get these kids through a season healthy and I think Sutter would be a huge improvement over Renney in this area. Maybe the Oil would play with emotion and initiate instead of tuck there tails between there legs and have there show run and like Renney would always say (play the game the right way and respect your opponent and the league and the officials naturally). And I remember before this season started in a interview where Sutter was raving about the kids and the addition of RNH to the stable and how highly he thought of them. He had no doubt that RNH would play in the NHL and how special of a player he was, then our coach for whatever reason had to wait till the 9 game mark just to be sure, or whatever his reasoning was. Bottom line is I think Sutter would be great with the kids. I also think he wouldn't care about Horcoff, his contract or anything like that and would have no problem playing him on the third or fourth line with no power play time or 4 on 4 time. Heck this reason alone might make it worth while to hire him.

If this is true, I'd be okay with having him on board for one year, MacT and Renney never made "Captain" Horcoff accountable. If he fails, then so be it, we bring up Todd Nelson for 2013-2014. If he succeeds even better.

Given his past, Brent would be the perfect fit here. We would be his #1 option since he wants to stay in Alberta. I just think its way too early for Todd Nelson.

Why is it too early?

I'd definitely look into it. Of course I'm not a big fan of Renney so I'd be seriously looking at any and all candidates. His coaching credintials are ok. His teams play with a lot more backbone than ours. I like that a lot. The only thing that would worry me is that he is like the whole family and doesn't manage to do anything with a whole lot of joy involved. lol Sounds a bit stupid but hockey is still a game and you have to be able to just enjoy it sometimes. You want an atmosphere where guys really enjoy coming to the rink. But I don't know a whole lot of what Brent is like behind the scenes.

Sounds like Brent wanted ownership/management to move some older players and potentially Kiprusoff AND Iginla and begin the re-build process. They choose Iggy and Kipper over Brent.

I don't think we should hire him. He doesn't seem like a guy who would communicate well with the kids but I could be wrong.

I still think Jacques Martin is the best option currently available outside of our organization.

Just like the ship of the same name, it will take a while for it to slip into the sea with him at the helm. Give out some more NTC/NMCs to useless over the hill players Jay, thats the way out of it hahaha. Gonna be a blast to watch this s*** show for the next several years.

In my opinion, he needs to develop more as a head coach. He is fairly young and could use a few more years. This is what, his second season in the AHL?

Yeah, he wanted more of a youth movement. I mean, that right there shows the kind of coach he is and sounds like he would fit in behind the bench perfectly in Edmonton. Sutter would have all the tools he was asking for in our organization. Tambo/Lowe would be idiots to not pursue Brent Sutter.

I see no reason why he can't be ready right now. He has had about 10 years experience in coaching IIRC. I think he has 2 IHL/UHL championships. Plus a Calder Cup as an assistant.

There have been plenty of coaches with a much lesser resume than Nelson who have been successful.

I'd be fine with Brent Sutter as coach. He has a good history with young players going back to his days in Red Deer and WJC. the Devils wanted him to continue and as one poster mentioned, Parise had his best offensive season with Sutter.

Apparently, according to Bobby Mac, Sutter wanted to go in a certain direction (hint youth) but Calgary wanted to go in a different direction (hint older players). More specifically, Sutter wanted the youth to be given bigger roles.

Teaching our young offensive stars to play TWO way hockey is not a bad thing. It's inevitable, because offensive only hockey players does not succeed in the playoffs.

Yeah Martin is an excellent system coach. He also seems to achieve success wherever he goes. Wouldn't be a bad option. But he is defensive minded so not everyone will be a big fan

If it was up to YOU.....who would you want to coach?.........an ageing Flames team or a young team with three number one picks in a row plus a star in Jordan Eberle!

3 years out of the playoffs will do that to any coach.

If Brent Sutter is anything like his brother Darryl, I think he might actually work out here. Although I was only 8 at the time, I remember Coach Sutter at a hockey school I attended in Sylvan Lake. Absolutely no nonsense and very tough coach. The thing was, even as an 8 year old, he somehow made everybody buy into his teaching and WANT to play well for him. He was very good at picking out the positive aspects of your game. If that type of coaching translates to a much higher level in the NHL, I could see the kids on the Oilers do very well under his coaching.

Would Brent make a good GM here? I would be willing to give it a chance. He always did great work in red deer.

I would definitely want to bring in Sutter. Apparently, he's good with young players and he's a no nonsense kind of guy that will push the team and more importantly the vets to play their best and if they don't, there will be hell to pay. I also believe that he's open to employing an offensive system with the emphasis on 2 way play, i think that's important for our youngsters to learn.
If we can bring in Sutter and have Nelson as an associate coach for the next couple of seasons until he's ready along with Kruger and Smith, that would be ideal.

Being a GM at the Junior level is absolutely nothing like being a NHL Gm.

Why not just hire the GM of the Oil Kings who has gotten all sorts of players from his team drafted by NHl teams?

We havent had that many coaching changes, especially for a team that has been this bad for so long. Remember that MacT left and Tambo brough in the two headed monster, Quinn as head coach and Renney as Associate Head coach. He bears a certain amount of resposibility for the failures that season with Quinn. The lack of progress from there suggest that maybe he doesnt have what it takes to move a team forward, the team is to complacent with where they are at.

Most teams this bad change the coach a few times before they turn things around. The Hawks needed Quennville to become elite, the Penguins needed Bylsma, the Bruins needed Julien. I dont want this team to be complacent and stick with Renney for 8 years like they did with MacT. Find something that works or move on.

Either of them would be an improvement on what we have now.
