I suspect the Caps may re-up Semin for similar money this summer, and trade Mike Green. That is the guy who just doesn't get it at this time of year. Semin elevated his game down the stretch.

Watching Green last night for 60+ minutes was downright depressing. He's always been a flawed player in a lot of ways, but his offensive awareness and patience with the puck was next to none just a few years ago. What used to be his ability to control the pace of the game when he was on the ice, is now him looking painfully slow whenever he's involved in the play. He's taken calm and collected to a level that now resembles catatonic and lazy. It's crazy to watch.
I think it's probably time for a long offseason and a change of scenery for him. I still think he could be effective with the right guys around him if he were healthy, but man, it was awkward watching him last night. Just a shell of himself.

This. Plus he is made of glass, plus Carlson and Orlov make him irrelevant.
Even before Green's game fell off a cliff, back when he was scoring 30 goals, once the playoffs started he would retreat into a shell. That right there is a classic example of the benefit of running a guy. He's completely gun shy under pressure, and it affects not only his play deep in his own zone, but his ability to lug the puck up ice and make an offensive play. Huge disappointment in the Spring. They've got to deal him. He is killing them in the playoffs every year.
By contrast, Semin is just a streaky scorer. He has three or four tremendous playoff series under his belt. He just killed the Rangers in two series, I believe. Green has no such postseason success.
Edmonton could be an option, and so could Anaheim. He enjoyed his greatest success with Boudreau. I have no idea where his value might be at the moment, but the Caps need to cut the cord.
I think Semin would stay in the NHL for a discount but only with a contender team that has another Russian player he wants to play with (Detroit, Nashville with Radulov, New Jersey if Parise leaves) ...I also think he might play better away from Ovechkin with a little more responsibility, sort of like how Malkin stepped up his game without Crosby
bottom line is despite what many people on this board think, there is no shortage of demand for a guy with Semin's skill level

Keep Semin, sign Kuznetsov, keep plugging away.
Absolutely agree with WHY Green fell off.
No need to trade him he is a UFA after the playoffs.
And Kuznetsov is more than likely staying in Russia, I hope not, but all signs point to him staying with Tractor.
So I hope they do keep Semin as he can carry the team when he goes on one of his streaks, and under DH he has really picked up his overall game.

Green is a RFA in July. Semin is a UFA in July. Kuznetsov has not said what he's doing. The media on both sides of the Atlantic is speculating feverishly, but only speculating until Kuznetsov makes a decision.

Seriously, wow. Talk about a guy with no compete level. Doc pointed out several times how nonchalant he was with the puck, it's the playoffs, get your head on straight.
There's absolutely no grit and muscle on that line. It would be way too soft.
What?? Gionta is great in the corners and in front of the net, he scores like 80% of his goals there. The guy might be 5'7 but he is also 175lbs, I don't think a lot of people appreciate how built that is. He is pro at leveraging that muscle and his lower centre of gravity in rough areas to gain position, and his speed/quickness let's him make the play with the puck.
Semin-Plek-Gionta has a sniper, a 2 way playmaking centre, and a gritty guy to work the corners/in front of net. It would be very well balanced offensively. Does it have a Lucic or Perry who can punch people out? NO, they are great but rare and not many teams actually do on their top lines, it is a hfboards fantasy that you NEED that.
For a guy who has only once gotten over 80 points in a season, he sure gets a lot of attention. I don't care what his skill level is, if he doesn't produce to the level he are capable of, there is something wrong. You can't keep propping him up with the "he has a high skill level" tag forever. People did that with Kovalev for years and ended up pulling their hair out year after year.
Check my avatar. Do I look like a Flyers fan? Watching Brayden Schenn the other night, you see a guy who deserves to be playing at the level he's at. He wants it so bad you can almost feel it oozing out of the television.
He should get a ridiculously small contract, or go play in the KHL. Make this guy earn his money already.

Reason: Grow up.
Just because he's Russian doesn't mean he's going to bolt back to Russia if he doesn't get paid. So simply minded. He said when he came back from Russia a few years back, that he didn't like the conditions and he won't go back.
He'll sign somewhere in the NHL at 5+ million. Likely staying in Washington.

I thought Semin looked very solid last night. Threw 3-4 solid hits but was only credited for one.

You can't teach skill, and that's the point. He's been great once Hunter took over in DC, and more consistent than he ever was under Boudreau.
