Since I go to U of T downtown, I figured I'd comment on this.

I go to UofT downtown. I just completed first year life science. I had 95% in high school. I dropped over 15%.
|
The 15% rule apply to a lot of schools and vary person to person. No surprise here.

My warning: DO NOT COME HERE. GO TO YORK, WESTERN, ETC. If it's too late, then call your other acceptances and beg. NO JOKE.

Stopped reading at York.

Listen. U of T does not have a good education. I don't blame any of you first years, you don't know. You're tricked by the reputation of UofT. Why do they have such a great reputation? RESEARCH, not education. We are top 10 in the world for RESEARCH. We used to be top 25 overall and dropped to 45. Do you know why? Undergrads are SICK of UT. The learning experience until you get to 3rd or 4th year sucks, and even then so it's nothing special.
|
Very debatable here, as some 1st year courses taught at U of T cover 2nd year material at other universities. No doubt the curriculum is challenging, and that's what produces great students-- not shameless bell curves test after test. The education level is top notch compared to other schools. The only knock is our class sizes are too large in 1st year. With Psych lectures up there in the 1000s and even Astronomy reaching 1000+. But what do you expect from the largest university in Canada? The school at least makes some effort to provide small classroom experience with special 1st year seminar courses that run with ~20 people per class. Can't fault UT for being large, prestigious, and continuously attracting some of the best students from worldwide.

U of T president David Naylor has said the Uni is decreasing their undergrad program and concentrating on grad and med school/lawschool. Why? More research for them. They don't care about you.
|
Taken out of context. They're not "decreasing" their undergrad program, they're making a better effort to improve their graduate programs so they can further cement their status as a top university for all education levels.

Facts about U of T:
Class averages are C-C+. If they are more, the professor must write a note explaining why. Infact, for one course the average was B- so they BELLCURVED DOWN by 4%.
|
This is certainly true. A few years ago the calculus average was 70%. And the prof had to create a near impossible final question in order to bring down the average. This is top-notch university for a reason. Does anyone expect good universities to go easy on them?

You will study much more here and do worse. No joke. I'm in the library every night. Right now, I'm at Gerstein library studying. On a friday night. During summer. And I'm not alone.
|
It depends on how you study. Bad habits won't help you at any other school or at life in general.

You get better education, marks, and experience at other Unis.
|
Education? No. But some schools will have programs more suitable for individuals. So I agree that you shouldn't go to UT based on the prestige alone. Actually check out what each university has to offer and pick the one that makes sense from a professional standpoint.
Marks? Yes. You'll probably get better marks at Lakehead.
Experience? Party experience maybe.

Our campus is indeed AMAZING... you will never experience it if you are a life sci, you will only see the library.
|
That's jokes. Really is. I believe several Student Union candidates are life sci majors.

Are girls aren't that hot

Agreed here. But at the same time we're not crowded with alpha males like other party schools. There's that balance
Quote:

and half of the school is asian. Diversity my rear end.
|
Well to a lot of Asians, U of T is the only university in Canada. (No joke.)
So obviously they apply here more so than any other school. And they're well qualified.
Do you expect the school to reject them because of some arbitrary demographic BS?

Example of difficulty: Math tests. The last question is designed so 10/1500+ people will get it right. It's worth 8%. If you almost have the full solution but do something wrong, you're lucky to get 2/3 marks. Chemistry: First test. Inorganic. High school material, some new stuff. Class average was 47%.
|
I know, but it's the last question we're talking about here... And this is a top university anyways, do you expect the profs to hand your 4.0 on a silver platter?
I don't have labs. Can't comment on this.
Quote:
DONT COME HERE IF YOU WANT TO GO TO MED SCHOOL. Med schools DO NOT have a preference. A UT student with 3.8 will not be choses over a York student with 4.0.
Come here if you want to enter workplace immediately (no further education.)
|
U T boasts a good acceptance rate into graduate schools, relative to other universities.
Quote:
|
UT doesn't show preference for it's own undergrads. I go to UT and want to go to UT med. Let's say I have 3.8. My own Uni will choose someone else from another Uni with higher mark.
|
Why should it show preference? This is a meritocracy.

The international kids are either really smart or dumb. They are partly why UT does this, internationals bring up average too high and ruin UT's rep of being hard.
|
>Either smart or dumb
Well I certainly couldn't figured that one out
Quote:
|
Bring lube to every test. Why? UT will **** you time and time again.
|
Depends on our work ethic. If you don't study you get ****ed anyways.
Quote:
Don't listen to the lies, it does not get better or easier in 2nd/3rd/4th years! You simply get used to UT and either do better later on or do worse and end up doing something else. 3rd year - 8 hour lab reports every week.
Once frosh ends, that's it. No more parties if you want 4.0. STUDY. Every DAY. Become used to the library, it will become your home.
|
There are legitimately people that study maybe 3 hours a day (and that's generous) and walk away with 4.0 Again, depends on how you study and your work ethic.
tl;dr U of T is great. #1 school in Canada for a reason. Come on over
