I am beginning to see what Brian Burke meant when he said that the Maple Leafs are the Vatican of Hockey.
Here we are, in the playoff season, celebrating the great Canadian sport, hockey.
All right. What does Rex Murphy, grand intellectual of the CBC, talk about? The failure of the Leafs! (The apology from MLSE is an excuse to lay it on.)
I do not know why this means so much to every Canadian, even in B. C., when Vancouver is expected to make a good run in the playoffs. But it does.
Montreal failed again this year, but no English language roasting of the players occurred. No scathing remarks about the GM before he was fired. Only a few things about the language issue.
Edmonton has been earning three #1 picks in a row, and that is not even when they started to fail - no ciriticism of the Oilers that I have read. No one lamenting the years when Gretz was The Man there.
Calgary just went into a downaward spiral, missing the playoffs, and with an aging roster - but no one is bothered.
But EVERY journalist and commentator in all of Canada wants to get in on the Leaf bashing.
Hockey is not the Canadian sport, it is Leafs' hockey that is the Canadian sport. Do not ask me why. I am merely observing.
CBC is awesome and Rex Murfy is awesome. The people who are mad about this video clip keep getting your feelings hurt. Our team is a joke and the more people take shots at it the better. This team deserves nothing more.
Yeah I'm mad. Mad at Rex Murphy? Mad at the Leafs haters? No I'm mad at this team and everyone involved in it.

Many around here probably don't know who Rex is but he's actually a pretty smart fellow but this was just kicking a man while he's down. Seems like every media source feels the need to do this while really not providing anything new. The Leafs suck...we get it. I'm still gonna be a fan through the thick and thin. Leafs fans should garner more respect then any fanbase in the league as far as I'm concerned. Longest drought in the league for the cup, only team in the league who hasn't made the playoffs post-lockout...people can make fun of us all they want but if it wasn't for us teams like Nashville,Phoenix,Tampa,Florida wouldn't even exist meanwhile, make a profit. We're sheep, so be it.
What a waste of my time. Wish I could have that three minutes back of my life. Guys a goof and this story is worn out beyond belief. Plus - his voice makes me want to punch him in the throat.
somehow i doubt youd have spent that 3 mins much differently if it were given back to you

it was great ....the leafs are a joke ....and if we all admit ,brian burke has been doing the 2 step backtracking for the past 6 weeks, this isnt annahiem where people forget promises ,everything said about the leafs can be backed up by facts spwewed by blow hard burke himself .....i think maybe 10% of hockeyfans would be more than midly surprised if burke got canned ....
Senators fan here. I wanted to say it's pretty classless to make fun of the apology the Leafs management offered.
The way the Leafs brass has handled this is a million times better than Oilers' or the Canadiens' way. Apologizing for hiring an anglophone coach? ridiculous. Acting smug about a 3rd first overall pick? please.
It would have been easy to say nothing knowing there would still butts in the seats next season. Kudos to you and I hope you guys end up with the better pick in the top 5.
Call Ripleys, a Sens fan defending the Buds who are under siege everywhere. Your comment about the Oilers smugness is bang-on. You would have thunk they won the Stanley Cup.
The Leafs could go 0-82 and the Sens can go 82-0 and more people would still care about the Leafs. Tell that to the Sens fans enjoying this video, because the truth hurts, that's why their owner has to go around crying like a little girl behind the scenes to the NHL and CBC Executives about not enough Sens coverage and too much Leafs coverage.
PLaying for the cup takes some luck too.. we should have played for and won the cup in 93~ Everyone knows that Gilmour gretzky highstick is one of the biggest missed calls of all time.
it cost us that game when we had all the momentum and we'd have played the canadians in the finals and even montreal players in interviews said they didn't want to play us.. we dominated them in the regular season and i'm pretty sure we'd have given them a much better go than LA
Excuses are for losers! Apologies are too!
One call does not a series lose. You would have an argument if this was an NCAA basketball tournament game. Not a 7 game series. And even then, it would be a stretch.
"Dominant"? First time I hear the 92-93 or any modern era leaf team called that. Sorry to crush your pipe dream, but a team is not dominant when they have to play in 3 game sevens and then cry about ONE missed call for almost 20 years as the source for all Leaf misfortunes. They would have "dominated" the Habs in the finals? Please ... Are you talking about the same habs that DOMINATED all other teams in the same playoffs you speak of?
Winning the cup may require some element of luck .... Especially if you are not good enough to win without it, but only if you are ever good enough to put yourself in a winning situation. Do you realize that the leafs have never even won 3 seven-game series in the playoffs ... Ever? Hoisting the cup requires winning 4. I guess we have been good enough only to go half way.
As for the Rex's segment. I thought it was cheeky. Most of you are too butthurt to appreciate it for what it was.

... By leaf fans who have not had anything better to talk about. Speaks for itself if you ask me.
CBC is a bit of a waste besides HNIC, the national is good though, and their comedy stuff like 22 mins and Rick Mercer. Also Red green was epic back in the day..

At least you are displacing your anger in the right direction. Some posters on this board blame critics of the team for the team being awful. Like its our fault or Rex Murphy's fault. How does it even make sense. Hell, I don't really even blame the players..they are what they are. I blame the high priced management team that continues to be the models of incompetence. Similiar to the previous management team. I might even be more forgiving if there seemed to be some light at the end of the tunnel. But I don't see it. The tunnel seems to be as dark as it ever has been. Meanwhile, I even forget what its like to have playoff hockey in Toronto as I watch some of the other teams play in the best tournament sports has to offer.
I'm mad. I'm sad. I have watched since the 70's and have always taken the playoffs for granted. Now I realize how lucky I was to watch all those exciting playoff series against teams like the Flyers, Sens, Canes, Isles etc..... I just assumed we would get another crack at the cup come April. Not anymore.
