Why did he fall so late in the draft!!! Guy has insane play-making skills and speed. That acceleration on that last feed to Cout was sooo sick...
I could be wrong but if I'm not mistaken there were concerns regarding his attitude...believe it or not. I now suspect that the Flyers spread those rumors in order to draft him! Hahaha
There's no doubt..he's probably the best player in the game after Crosby. The way he sees the ice is just beyond Stamkos. Stamkos is a high engine player with an incredible scoring touch..but have you seen him make the players around him better like Giroux? Giroux has that ability just like Crosby. If I were to rebuild my team and Crosby's gone..I'd go with Giroux.
Not long ago a the thread consensus was he was not in the same class as Malkin, Crosby, and Stamkos. Was just verifying the change...It was literally 2 months ago people were saying they need to see more consistency and that hes not "elite" yet, because this season was a "fluke". Yet he had 76 points last season as well...
76 points isn't anywhere close to "superstar". That's more like "1st line forward".
It still amazes me many teams passed on him...especially the Habs....he was playing in their province....and he is French...I can't understand how they missed him???
I wonder how the Timmins feels when he watches Giroux play. That might haunt him for a while.
According to a few scouts/bloggers on Twitter, apparently Trevor Timmins had Giroux rated quite high on his draft list that year, but Gainey suggested that he draft a defenseman instead. So they went with David Fischer, whom we all know hasn't played a singe game in the NHL.
The kid in the Saku Koivu jersey is Claude at 17 years old by the way.
This thread is started from a Sabres fan, but man he is a treat to watch. Such a nice guy to....
Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Giroux the Superstars of the league at this moment. I know many people this season did not consider him one. Point must be proven now. Anyone disagree?
Giroux has been a superstar for a while. Alot of people were expecting him to really break out this year with Richards and Carter gone. It elevated his role, and that's the only chance he needed to shine
You don't score 6 points in 1 playoff game without being at least a borderline superstar. Must feel good for Flyers fans after having to hear about Crosby and Malkin all this time.

After I watched those 4 HBO episodes I'm not surprised.
So what I'm really asking is, how many points the likes of Gretzky, Coffey and Orr managed to get in one playoff game at their best? And, were there anyone else with 6+ points in a PO game before 87-88?
Gretzky has had 3 games with 7 points in the playoffs (1983, '85 and '87), Coffey also has had a 6 point-game in 1985 i think, Orr i don't know. There have been other with 6 point-games obviously, but 6+ points only 3 or 4 i think.

Not even close to Crosby's level.
Giroux plays with Hartnell or Jagr (and other skilled and talented players)
I was going off the worst case scenario (from the Caps/Ovie fan point of view). Without doing any calculations beforehand I though it was probably slightly hyperbole but certainly close enough not to dismiss. Now let's consider how these playoffs could conceivably turn out for Giroux and Ovechkin:
As of now, Giroux has 44 pts in 42 games. If the Flyers reach the finals Giroux has, say, 20 games left and scores 32 points in them (32 in 20 isn't totally unheard of, but 38 in 22 would join Giroux to the company of Gretzky and Mario, so admittedly that's borderline). That'd make his career total 76 points in 62 games ie. 1.226 points per game.
As for Ovechkin, we all know he's not the same player he was 2-3 years ago. He had solid playoffs last year but now he's 0+0 after the first game, had only one SOG and he faces the reigning Vezina and Conn Smythe winner in Tim Thomas. I hope Ovie scores as much as he can but it's not impossible that the worst case scenario happens and Boston sweeps the Caps in four and Ovie doesn't get a single point. That'd make his career playoff totals 50 points in 41 games ie. 1.220 points per game. There you go, it is "remotely close" at worst.
And for the record, both Ovechkin and Giroux are in my top 4 active favorite players (Selänne and Rinne take the remaining spots).
Edit: You also mention the goal per game stat. I never said anything about goals, only points. Of course I agree with you on the GPG department.
Edit2: Also note that while this post season just started, Crosby has already managed to climb over Ovy in career playoff PPG. The sample sizes are fairly small (especially Ovy having only 38 games under his belt) so even a single hot game from either of them can result in a change of standings on the all time list. I kinda hate Crosby so this is sad news.
