One thing I've always thought would be a good idea would be to put a little graphic under the scores that showed the numbers of players coming out during a line change.
This would actually be a brilliant idea, as long as it was small and out of the way I'd go for it considering you can't always see the whole ice on tv it'll let you know who's on the ice but out of your picture.
I'm not someone who has any problem figuring out who's who (my team or opposition) and would find any graphics on the ice during play an annoyance. However, if like mentioned before they put the names under the players prior to the faceoff and removed them as soon as the puck was dropped I would not complain.
I don't trust the networks to do it subtle enough for it not to be distracting.
I wish they would pop up a PIP window though or something to show line changes. The camera pans can sometimes miss players going off and its nice to know which players are coming out. Not a big deal though.
i would be fine if they did it for line changes. they could easily have a thing a little bigger than the powerplay time come down on the side and it wouldn't be that distracting.
How about something simple? After a goal is scored, display the scorer (number of goals in season) and the two assists. Sometimes I see it. Sometimes I don't.
This could be incredibly useful for newer fans. I don't really see why there is such a violent opposition to this. It looks like it could be unobtrusive enough that we can ignore it if we want...
Heck even as a current fan it's hard for me to remember every players number and which line they play with. I think this would be great for the iPad/iPhone/SmartTVs where you can toggle settings.
I think a lot of folks might be missing the point though. This would be great for players OFF SCREEN. It can be a temporary little popup. Like the OP said, it's most useful when dmen are changing behind the play. But I like someone else's idea of just listing the numbers of the line change under the score
I'd like to see a visual indicator somewhere of how much time each player has left on his shift.. like an 'endurance' indicator, based on how hard the player has skated.. surely the technology exist...
Isn't that what the numbers on their jerseys are for? I have no problem identifying players. I guess this is more for new hockey fans.
Or for people who have better things to do than memorize names & numbers of hockey players. Good for you if you have enough time to invest in the sport that you have all that stuff memorized, but that just isn't realistic for most fans.
Seems stupid to me. People who care about the names and positions will learn the names and positions; the internet has made this incredibly simple for even the laziest of fans. People who want to watch hockey for the hockey should simply enjoy watching, and rely on the color commentator(s) - as has been the custom since radio only days - to tell them who has the puck, who got the puck, and where anyone of importance to the play might be.

Or maybe we're just awful fans.
Well, I guess the point is, if you "have better things to do", then why would you care if the screen continuously spoon-fed you the information or not?

That's really not the point. There's nothing wrong with wanting to know exactly who is on the ice, and not wanting to memorize the names and numbers of 750 different players, most of whom will not play my team more than once in a season. They have graphics telling us to the tenth-of-a-second how much time remains in the period, but God forbid if I'd like a small graphic detailing precisely who is on the ice? Get over yourself.

You're equating a small overlay of the time clock in a corner with cluttering of the ice surface with name overlays all over the place?
Hey, if you think your viewing experience would be enhanced by continual distractions trying to follow the puck through the length and dotted i's of overlaid names like Niederreiter, for example, then all the power to you.
Taken from the epic moment which happened during Sharks/Blues game. You would need to know the numbers though.
Don't mind a tiny graphic like this, actually, since the numbers aren't overly space-consuming, nor distracting, and don't interfere with viewing the play. If updated "properly", we could tell that so-and-so just came off the bench on a change that was off-screen, and might be lurking in the neutral zone, or whatever.

The properly thing...it might be too time consuming for the networks to update all the time. But maybe even once in a while as a drop down that goes away (like how many networks handle PP time, goal announcements, or random stats).
