A past-his-rime 27 year old Gretzky took the Kings from 4th last in the league and a -41 to 4th in the league and a +41. That is likely the best single improvement one player has ever given a team.
Stick Gretzky on the Blue Jackets and they're a contender. Hell,he'd make Rick Nash a 55 goal scorer.
For a 20 year old Gretzky, whatever or whoever it takes. With Gretzky you are pretty much guaranteed to win a Stanley Cup a some point. Even if it takes a few years of drafting or signing free agents to get the pieces in place to play with him it`s still worth it.
Everyone on the Sens roster, I then clone 20 year old Gretzky, and have an entire line full of Gretzkies, with some as injury replacement. Sign a goalie, and a couple of bruising defencemen. And I think the Ottawa Gretzky's do quite well.
At 37, Gretzky tied for 3rd in scoring with 90 points and led the league in assists with 67. His back was beyond ruined by that point and he was a shell of his former self, yet he was still among the elite.
Sadly, I don't see Crosby playing at 37, much less finishing top 5 in scoring.

In theory, wouldn't an entire Gretzky offense inevitably shut down throughout a whole season?
You'd have to think sooner or later teams would just to take some of the Gretzkys out.
Or are you saying you have an endless stream of Gretzkies?
Gretzky is worth more than any complete NHL roster at this moment , especially if you have him for a good 15-20 years in this scenario.Plenty of time to rebuilt around him and increasing your chances of winning it all with the greatest ever.
Say time travel or cloning was perfected and you get a 20 year old Gretzky (circa 92 goal season).
All the teams in the league are allowed to compete for his services by giving up in a trade, the recipient of which is the new expansion team in the league.
So, what does your team give up for Gretzky?
Seeing as how Detroit is a fantastic club I'm not sure I'd give up many players, probably Bertuzzi, Valtteri Filppula and five 1st round picks.
Terrible, those 5 first round picks would be between 25th-30th. For a 20 year old Gretzky your going to have to start with Datsyuk/Franzen and add picks from there.
For the habs there is knowbody I wouldn't trade (I'd prefer to keep Price) but the Habs just wouldn't have the assets. Pacioretty, PK, Eller, Beaulieu wouldn't be enough when you've got the Pens offering up Malkin and Neal.
Gretzky played in a cheesy era. If he were to play at his prime in today's game he wouldn't rack up more than 120 points. I'm tired of all these players that played back in the day and racked up cheesy stats such as 50 in 50. 163 assists in one season? Such BS. Much easier to score back then, No doubt Crosby is better than this overrated ****.

Franzen is fair, but 1st rounder are 1st rounders.
Five 1st round draft picks is good no matter where they are.
Okay, maybe five 1sts, three 2nds and three 3rds?
I wouldn't want to trade too many players.
So Franzen, Filppula, Bertuzzi, White and all those picks.
