Button evaluates players on the basis of the career he thinks they'll have and not where they'll go on draft day.

He thinks Grigorenko will end up being a 2nd line centre, fwiw.

with the tight bunch of prospects after first overall, it's not unlikely that some team picking in the top 10 will get overly bullish on someone and be willing to pay a ransom to secure him.

if we could walk out of the first round with a top 10 pick and two quality assets (another 1st, quality prospect, quality young NHLer), I'd be just as happy as landing any 1 of the prospects that will be there for us at 3rd.
Yeah it could be interesting. If we move down, we could aim for Colberg...or there will be many Ds available...

But it's gonna be hard to move down and not draft one of the top forwards or Ds...

He's not in the top 60. Haven't seen Thrower either, though that's a bit less surprising.

Thanks for trying tho.
Timmins has put a lot of NHL in the lap of the Habs org. The fail is GM trading away so much talent for guys like Gomez. We set our defense back when we gave away a top shut down guy like McDo for Gomez who isn't even better than Koivu was.

Well as much as Thrower is one of the players I want with our 2nd, he's probably a borderline top 60 so it's not unheard of. But Maatta surprises me, he might not have top pairing potential, but he seems like the perfect mid pairing defender to me.

I'd say Thrower is probably a borderline top 30 player, Maatta a 10-15 prospect. That's quite weird, to be honest.

You also have guys like Kosmachuk (50ish) and Sissons (not top 60) out of place too. A prep kid in the top 15...

This ranking smells like trying to outthink NHL scouts, I just don't buy this ranking as being a truly relevant one.

Galchenyuk and Samuelsson should both be available (I saw Samuelsson as low as 3rd round on some rankings, namely CS) when we pick, but I think Koekkoek will be picked late first round, not sure he'll drop to 2nd.

Too many interesting names in the 2nd-3rd rounds, Hertl (late first probably), Nieves, Thrower, Kerdiles, Marcantuoni, Bozon, Zharkov, Sutter, Slepyshev, Samuelsson...

Anyone has more info on Mark Jankowski? The kid is playing in prep school in Quebec! And is he really considered a 1st round pick material?

Olli Maatta is a beast. He can play both end and is underrated. Should be a top 10 selection if not we need to ship both our 2nd round picks and something extra for a mid first to pick Maatta.

If we can land Galchenyuk and Maatta in this draft, I would say we have a very good core.

Subban, Beaulieu, Tinordi, Emelin, Ellis, Maatta reminds me a little of our depth in 93' Desjardin, Schnieder, Haller, Odelein, Brisebois, Hill, Daigneault

It's the list of the players he believes will be the best in the long run. He either believes Maata will bust or he just forgot him. Again, it's not a mock Draft so it's not how he thinks the draft will go.

Except no list is a mock. NHL teams don't pick players because they saw them rated there 'derp second round pick on CS list, must pick dar'. I'd explain how a draft board works, but I feel like I'd be wasting my time.

Look at McKenzie's list and look at Button's. One was made from merging the opinion of 10 NHL scouts, Button's was made after smoking some sweet crack.

I like Button's list. At least he have original opinions and i'm sure he'll be right on some point. It used to be RLR that played that role. It take balls to put Grigorenko so low but if he seen him often and it's his opinion then why not??

Scouting agencies tend to be ridiculously similar and come draft day we realize that NHL scouts had many hidden cards all year long.

It's funny how Button's lists are usually close to how teams end up drafting anyway, but then some big time player slips and gets drafted 10 spots lower and people say "oh he should've gone top 5" ...

I'm still saying Timmins comes out of left field and drafts a defenseman. I feel there is more certainty, with almost equal upside with the top ranked defensemen in this draft as there is with the forwards.

If he does draft a Forward, my bet is on Forsberg. Too many question marks surround Grigorenko and Galchenyuk.

That would not surprise me at all, specially that the U18 is raising question about Forsberg.

I'd still bet on Galchenyuk but if he's taken by Columbus I'd bet on a defensemen.

Do you think he'll look at Murray and think he'll end up like L.Schenn?

Or take Ryan McDonagh, he was 3rd on our list...

So maybe you don't agree with his list...I know I don't on many players, but the fact is chances are that he's gonna be right on many players (not draft order, because it's not a mock draft, but on how those players pan out)

how do you know that??
