This isn't anything new though, right? Isn't that basically how match penalties work?

Pretty sad. Back in the day, this kind of stuff would have been settled by the teams. Players knew to stay honest or risk getting wrath. This is how guys like Probert, Semenko, and Kocur kept jobs in the NHL.

Probert would have had a job in today's NHL.

A match penalty is such a ******** call. Even if the stick hit him in the throat, did that look like a deliberate intent to injury? Hell no, it was a knee jerk reaction to seeing a teammate get ****ed with. If he connected, maybe a major. But if it connected, it would have been obvious.

Never mess with an angry viking. I dated a svensk, I know.

In case there was any ambiguity about whether that last goal was offsides or not;

Holy hell that was off sides and it isn't even close, lol. Man the reffing crew is horrible. Wouldn't think they'll be getting the call for the 2nd round.

Three goals...

First was finally a powerplay goal. Finally someone parked in front of the net and Semin's soft slapper went into the net.

Second was a four-on-four, right after the B's scored. It almost looked like a set play, with Laich feeding a skylob into the offensive zone and Ovechkin beating everyone to it.

Third was Laich's breakaway as no one accounted for him, and it was a great feed from Backstrom.

I'm looking for the five-on-five grinding goals. We need to establish the zone and convert. It's hard when at times we cannot win one-on-one battles and have to rely on the breakaway.

We need to grind the Bruins. We need to win those one-on-one battles.

Anyone have video of the Seidenberg hit on Backstrom at 10:17 of the third. Seidenberg got 2 minutes for roughing and nearly decapitated Backstrom on it.

Well at least DFH is countering Julien in the media with his recent comments about the Bruins targeting Nicky's head. Julien's comments after Game #2 about the Ref's seemed to have an affect in Game #3. Here is hoping DFH's comments at least draw the Ref's attention to the post whistle BS the Bruins are throwing at Nicky's melon.

The problem is that we are not a very creative nor very synchronized offensive team. You can grind all you want but you still have to be on the same page, understand angles, and have some wrinkles in your game. On Boston's last goal you saw a nice mix of all of that. This is why I believe our coaching has short changed us for years.

The refs completely blew the call. That second line does not fit the situation what-so-ever. If that were the standard, Beagle and Ovie should have been called for a Match Penalty because of Cross Checking.

Shaw just got 3 games.......not good for Backis IMO. Shanny is going to over-compensate for blowing the Weber call. Shaw and Hagelin did not deserve 3 games.

i think we look back at those old days from one side and forget the other. dale hunter lived in those days and guys like probert didnt keep him honest. or linseman or tocchet or however many others like them there were. you think that there was a single fighter in the nhl that kept bobby clarke "honest"????

thats what dave schultz and bob kelly were for. to let clarke and duponte slash and gash and terrorize as they pleased.

Shanny will be over compensating once again for the leagues own incorrect perception that the fans of the sport did not like that Pitt Philly game 3. Too much media coverage... only they are the only ones thinking it was negative.

Good luck trying to score a ticket to game 4.

Does anyone homer simpson glasses aside think Nick was deliberately trying to injure him?

we will see. we got a little insight into what happens with these things with ov. mcphee put together a case to argue in ov's behalf.

in this case mcphee will be able to take video and pierre mcguire's commentary in that game that boston was attacking backstrom and going to his head. as a player with a clean suspension record and with full knowledge that it was boston's game plan to bash him in the head at every opportunity, i am not sure mcphee can't lawyer him a better deal than shaw got.

Wasn't Peverley's stick actually higher than Backstrom's as they confronted each other?

This is Ovie all over again. Something that is a two minute trip to the box ends up being games because of ****ing idiot refs and Shanahan not properly doing his job.

Bruins fans think Asham's and Backstrom's cross checks were exactly the same and that Backstrom is skating around recklessly out there... Does the game look different watching in black and gold glasses?

Backstrom missed 40 games due to a head hit caused by a guy and was suspended for only 5 games.

So basically, for every 8 games Nick was out, Bourque missed 1 game. Peverely won't even miss 8 seconds. The idea that Nick should miss any time for what he did is absurd.

And who gives a fug that he got a match penalty. The fact that Bourque got only 2 minutes for a flagrant attempt to injure his head resulting in a loss of 40 games shows that the call on the ice should have absolutely no bearing on whatever supplemental discipline is handed down.

Shanahan failed to provide justice for Nick in January. It would be terrible to see him compound that error here.

Really, Ted and George today should be quite busy. Work the f'in system, make a little f'in video of it showing Nicks stick ramping up the other. Make some calls. Work the same media outlets the NHL is afraid of.

Yes Ted can threaten to make 1000 CD's and snail mail it out to all the major media outlets showing the super close up of what actually happened. Basically, have the media expose injustice by the league should Shanny make an incorrect ruling once again. The fact that its Nick, Borks victim, should make for quite the story, don't you think?

I'm a Bruins season ticket holder since 83 and most of my buds don't think Backstrom should get suspended- its close and it would piss you off if you are a Bruins fan but he's not that type of player....tough call but it would not upset me all that much if he skates free; it would appear to be a big advantage to Boston but the way this game works Perrault would probably score a hat trick in his place and the Caps win...little makes sense in this playoff season so if he sits a game (and I think rep and concussion history he gets only a fine) the Caps rally around and play great
