"Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be. But what happened Friday night on Long Island wasn't hockey. It was a travesty. It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that.
"The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed.
"We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action.
"If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to re-think whether I want to be a part of it."
I find it funny how Cherry would always poke at Ovechkin for not being a "true" hockey player, yet its pretty clear he has 1000% more balls that Sid.
It should be noted, Cherry has ALWAYS "liked" Ovechkin more then Crosby. He didn't like Ovechkin after he scored, but he liked the way he played, Crosby on the other hand he has pretty much always talked about his "*****yness" (slashes and other stuff). While I don't exactly care for Cherry's hatred of most Europeans for no other reason then they are European, he doesn't hate on Ovechkin for what he does hitting wise and what not, he was always talking about showing up the other team which he thought Ovechkin was doing. I(and I think most) would argue it was genuine excitement for goals scored by his team, he just happened to do a lot of it early in his career.
