Rob Rossi @RobRossi_Trib
Staal said what media sees from #pens not indicative of what is said behind closed doors. Also, he's not thinking about speculation on him.
Interesting he didn't say that the speculation wasn't true.
Twitter is all a-stir over his comments. What did he say exactly?
I listened to it live. To me what he said was that something drastic needs to be done. Shake up the core of the team. He said he had nothing to base it on and was just throwing a name out there when he said about trading Letang.
I mean Rossi can be a hack. But I think in this case he wasn't saying we should trade letang, but saying that something drastic should be done in the offseason.
Baring a miracle come back.
Frankly I agree. There is something very wrong with the DNA of our team when we go into a must win situation and completely lose our composure like this. We needed our core to step up big, that's what is supposed to seperate the great players from the merely good. When they are on the big stage and needed to perform, they do.
Not one of our guys really has played a good 60 minute game yet. Not one.
Malkin, 1 even strength point in a series that is going like a track meet? Really?
Kunitz, just how many dumb penalties are you going to take?
Neal, what the hell where you thinking?
Crosby, screened the goalie for a goal, gave the puck over high on the PP for a shorty (sure Martin contributed mightly but still) and I'm not happy with his play overall.
Staal showed up and scored 2 last game, but he's supposed to be an elite shutdown center, he is being schooled on this by a 19 year old from philly.
The OT goal. I don't care if Letang should've had that puck, he MUST box his guy out, but doesn't. basic stuff.
To a man we are playing like utter crap. We did it against Montreal. We crapped the bed against tampa after being up 3-1 you must win that, I don't care who is out injured, that was winnable.
Something is wrong with this team. I don't know what, coaching, chemistry? dunno. but a serious trade like philly did last season must occur. Re-arranging the deck chairs on the titanic just won't get it done.

Is it really even necessary to add fuel to the speculation fire while the Pens are currently down 3-0 in what is easily one of the worst first round performances in team history? Do we really need to agitate these guys more?
Malkin's plan. Pittsburgh superstar Evgeni Malkin told the Russian press on Monday that he plans to play in the World Championships if the Penguins are eliminated. Malkin, who is favored to win the NHL's MVP award, has no goals in the series and has been frustrated by Couturier's defensive work.

Isn't he in the process of building a house in Pittsburgh? Or is that Geno?
Read something to that effect like a month ago.
That's kinda interesting. I was wondering if things like this happen often to sort of pay people under the table without counting towards the salary cap. Sorta like saying, "Sid if you play for 8.7 x 5, I'll buy your $1 million house for $3 mill." Not trying to start a conspiracy theory since I think Sid knows he makes enough money and doesn't need more, but just curious if it happens behind the scenes

Reason: Looks like I quoted the wrong guy... I meant to quote a post about David Moorhouse (Pens President) buying Sids first house
Philly PR bs.....it makes no difference where would anyone go after the series, except that Philly thinks junk like this can stir the pot even further.

I'd up that to "in NHL history", though I honestly don't know which I'm surprised more by, Pittsburgh or Vancouver. Possibly, the historical saving grace for the Penguins would be if they managed to win one game and Vancouver gets swept. Barring a miracle from either team, this will go down by one of the worst playoff disappointments of all time. Remember, a 1 seed has NEVER been down 0-3 to an 8 seed. Ever. That's amazing.

That link has philly.com as its only source, and philly.com has no quotes whatsoever. 100% bs
Malkin's a flake, and I can't ****ing stand him even bringing up the WC tournament.
He's great, and I love him, and I'll be mighty pissed if they ever move him, but **** does he ever come with a ton of conditions in order to perform.
I doubt he was the only guy on a playoff team that said 'If I'm available' when asked to play by his country. Plus it's coming from the Philly media. I can't imagine he's trying to lose so he can go play for Russia.

No I never meant to say he's losing on purpose, but even if the subject is brought up, just dance around the question or say that his mind's not there yet. That being said, I had no idea that it originated from a Philly paper. I take it back.
The flake part still stands though. I really, really hate how he's played in this series and how everything else gets blamed but him. Yeah, by now I'd like to see him taken away from the Couturier matchup, but for ****s sakes you're paid almost $9M a year so that it doesn't matter who you're lined up against, especially when it's a kid.

Lots of crap coming out of the Philly media. I'm actually avoiding most media coverage of this series. I realize they have to make a living, but the complete 180 from some of the 'respected' journos and media outlets is as bad as the Philly fans trolling this board. I get your frustration. And it's not just a 19 year old kid, it's a unit designed to shut him down that's centered by a kid so he's gets all the credit. But, hey ... that line didn't make it on the scoreboard except on the PP on Sunday, but Geno's did. At this point, I'll take any sign of improvement.
I don't see what the problem is with Geno wanting to play in the WC anyway. I'm sure he's not the only player who will get bounced early and want to play for their country.
Like MM said. If Staal is offered a nice contract extension this off season and doesn't sign it, then that should tell ya he doesn't want to be here anymore. Which said he can't blame him, being stuck in between Cooke and Kennedy.
But does he want to be a top line center for the likes of Minnesota or Winnipeg etc...
IMO....Staal doesn't seem like the type who wants to carry a team or be the main guy in the spotlight every night.
A very small part of me feels we can win tomorrow. I don't think Colligan is right in the sense that the only things separating us from being down 0-3 and being in this series is bad bounces and shady calls though.
We never had a chance in this series if we can't kill off a ****ing penalty.

but he could want to be a 2nd line center on a scoring line. Especially since that would probably come with a higher salary. I wouldn't blame him one bit. IMO it's not the third line part that might get him, its the shutdown role with grinders on his wings. If he can get a top 6 spot and develop his offensive game it would probably mean a few extra million dollars by the time he retires.
Since it's all speculation/hyperbole/presumably BS anyways I have a question about those Geno WC comments.
Doesn't Geno more or less have to compete for Russia if we get eliminated? I remember reading something along the lines once of how Canadians give their players a choice for these kinds of international things, buf if you're Russian and Mother Russia knocks on your door and asks you to play.....you do it without question.

I disagree. In the first two games it was just weird **** that went against them at significant times and Philadelphia capitalized. For example, if the offside call had been made on the Briere goal in game one, I'm confident this series would have been completely different. When we look back on this series, with the clarity of hindsight, I believe we'll all look back on that play as the defining moment of the series.

That true?
No, not really......difference is that it is a great dishonor not to represent your country when you are able.

Very true. I guess it's up to him if he wants to focus on offense somewhere else (as long as said team wants him to develop that and give up the PK ice time and shut down role).
Plus developing a better offensive game depends on what team and what wingers he would be in between on a nightly basis
