Really? This has to be explained again? Go look at Bard Richards trade (he had 3 yrs left). Then go look at Mike Richards trade (8 yrs or something). Now go look at the Burns trade (1 yr left).

Now, while Burns didn't fetch quite what M Richards did, he did fetch something similar to what B Richards did (highly valued prospect, young top 6 winger, roster player vs 1st (offset by 2nd going other way), solid 2nd line winger, solid prospect).

Now remember that Staal is 3 yrs younger than Burns. He'll easily fetch a young top 6 winger or a young shutdown D who has the potential to play on the top pairing (and can already play).

If Staal is made available, a GM will pay big for him.

One of the many great overlooked Anaheim prospects.

Anyway, first round pick of Ducks a couple of years ago. Absolutely dominated AHL this year, and looked great in his last stint with us. He will be a full time player for us next year on a line with Ryan and hopefully a new 2nd line center.

I'm still chuckling from this. Non-leaf fans are always bashing leaf fans for creating proposals for star players and not giving up any good assets in return. A common response to such proposals are something like "have to give quality to get quality, start with Kessel or Phaneuf or your 1st rounder." I now create a proposal for Staal that trades away Kessel and now you say trading him is a bad idea.

Just seems that Leaf fans are NEVER right.

I made sure to catch his games on center ice when he was called up. Guy's going to be a hell of a player.

Who the hell cares about the 1st round pick, honestly and don't give me that crap about the draft being in pittsburgh.

I really wish Shero would have moved it for a big mean D-d man at the deadline I was pissed he made no moves then and REALLY pissed that they were clowned in the first round.

What a horrible, horrible "proposal".

Fowler is worth way more than Orpik. Fowler is on the upswing with his whole prime ahead of him and Orpik is probably past his prime with a few serviceable seasons left in him.

I don't see a big difference between Ryan and Staal. Different players. Just a matter of need. Ryan is more skilled. You'll get more offense out of him, but Staal has the edge in terms of the all around game. I think it kind of evens out. Like I said, that one is more about need.

Ryan has far more value that staal right now.

I still think That Edler for Staal is a good trade.

I don't mind the Edler/Staal trade.

Still don't get the huge difference between Staal and Ryan. I guess Ryan is more of a highlight reel. Ryan is also over a year older. He's been steadily in the 30+ goal 60 points range. Staal is over a year younger and is steadily in the 20+ goal 50 point range. Both will continue to get better since they are young. Ryan may become more steadily a 70-80 point player and Staal will likely become a 60-70 point player in a bigger role. It's basically the rate he was scoring at when Sid was out. Staal also has the edge defensively.

Ryan > Staal offensively
Staal > Ryan defensively
Overall it kind of evens out.

I think you have that mixed up there, bud.

Also Edler for Staal = BARF-city.

My thoughts exactly, but I might give a slight edge to Staal because of his past accomplishment (cup, being a playoff beast etc.) over Ryan's resume so far.

I think Ryan and Staal have similar value, but I give Ryan the edge since he's likely to become a 40 goal and closer to a ppg player once he gets 1st unit pp time. But, this can go either way, depending on the team needs.

However, regarding the above bolded statement of yours...I'm curious to hear your explanation as to how 36 points in 73 playoff games constitutes being labeled a playoff beast?

If both Palmieri and Etem were both ready i'd seriously consider Ryan for Staal straight up, because we could take Forsberg at 6....but Etem is probably another year away. The more I think about Staal the more I think he's exactly what we need. you can match his lineup vs top lines, get Getzlaf and Perry easier matchups, and you can build a 3rd line of youth and/or offense but like I said the timing is a bit off and the contracts give Ryan a fair bit more value.

I agree that Staal would be perfect for the Ducks' 2nd line...It would be a huge gamble trading Ryan for him though, considering Staal could walk as an UFA right after. I'd tend to think that if that trade happened and then the Ducks didn't have a really strong year, that Staal would walk. Only way it would be worth considering is if Staal was signed longer term, IMO. But yeah, I'd love having him...especially if there were a way to get him without giving up Ryan so that he and Ryan could play together, which I know would pretty much be impossible.
