Black Aces (Phantoms' players promoted for the NHL playoffs)

The complete list of players recalled from Adirondack (AHL) on April 17, 2012:

Phantoms' roster -- http://www.phantomshockey.com/pages/Team/Roster.asp
  • Oskars Bartulis
  • Tyler Brown
  • Matt Ford
  • Erik Gustafsson
  • Ben Holmstrom
  • Oliver Lauridsen
  • Michael Leighton
  • Brandon Manning
  • Tye McGinn
  • Harry Zolnierczyk

Quote:
The Adirondack Phantoms’ 2011-12 AHL season ended before their final game of the year, as they were eliminated from contention when the Manchester Monarchs beat the Hershey Bears (who couldn’t win when we needed them to, apparently) last Saturday. As such, the Phantoms announced today that nine players had been recalled by the Flyers as part of this year’s “Black Aces” group.

As a quick reminder, the Black Aces are reserve players eligible for the NHL playoffs that train with their respective team in the postseason. While the roster limit is set at 23 players during the regular season, there is no limit during the playoffs. The name itself is a reference to the dead man’s hand of black aces and eights, and was originally ascribed to players who had fallen out of favor with upper management.

A good solid list. I'm sure Testwuide and Kessel aren't happy (assuming they are healthy.)

Tyler Brown was a bit of a surprise in preseason camp (the article is from that time):

Quote:
“Tyler Brown is a kid I didn’t know a lot about; we signed him as a free agent last spring, Paul Holmgren said on Tuesday. “His speed has caught my eye.”

That’s one of the things the speedy winger was hoping would set him apart. He has played the last four seasons with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League and had a career high 25 goals and 34 assists in 67 games last season. Now he’s ready to take the next step after signing an entry-level contract with the Flyers in March.

“I know a lot of guys, a lot of friends in other camps, that are saying it’s really hard, tough, but this is good,” Brown said. “You get your feet moving. You get your legs moving.

“I’m just sticking with my role. I’m a good penalty killer. I like to think I’m a pretty quick hockey player, so I’m just gonna play my game tomorrow and hopefully get noticed.”

I was hoping to see Mike. But it looks as if it's time for him to move on. Kessel I could care less about. I did like what I saw from Manning's game while he was up.

Being a Black Ace is a good indicator of what the Flyers think of you

Good to see the Dane getting some recognition. His skating looked better as his rookie season went by.

I saw Mcguinn play quite abit his last year in juniors and he was pretty amazing, very gritty player. Very happy for him that he's gonna be with the NHL guys for the playoffs.

From what I understand, he's about as good defensively as Briere is.

I wrote off Testwuide at the beginning of this years prospect camp to be honest.

They had guys joining camp for the first time like Read or Zolnierczyk who would clearly express their goal of staying as long as possible and fighting till the end to make the team out of training camp when asked by the press.

And then there was M. Testwuide, been to camp before, who didn't seem to even have an idea where he was headed to, talking irrelevant nonsense about spending some time with his buddies at camp, being happy to be here again, see what happens...

You don't get anywhere in pro sports with such a lazy ass "wait and see" mentality. I don't know him in person. Maybe I'm doing him wrong. But from what I've read and heard in interviews he doesn't appear very ambitious.

Black aces are phantom players that are called up once their season is over.Ranford isn't even signed and might not ever be.

Would have liked Akeson to get a look with the Aces, even if he isn't defensively savvy, he would have been one the same ice surface with the Flyers coaches, specifically Lavy, who pushes all of his forwards to be defensively responsible. That experience could have hopefully pushed Akeson to hone that part of his game during the offseason.
