Have The Philadelphia Flyers Become Stanley Cup Favorites?

One game at a time.....next one will be tough and they won't be any easier if we have to play King Henry and the Blueshirts...

Quote:
Heading into their series with the Pittsburgh Penguins, many had the Philadelphia Flyers as a team that just wouldn’t be able to match up with their Atlantic Division rivals.

There’s little doubt that they’d be able to keep up for a good chunk of a seven-game series, but there was no way they’d be able to take four out of seven games from a Pittsburgh squad that looked nearly unbeatable down the stretch. Right? Wrong.

The Flyers haven’t gone as far as “shocking” the hockey world with their 3-0 series lead, not because no one expected them to win the series, but because this was a series that was going no less than six or seven games. Now the Flyers have a chance to end it with the minimum.

In the process, they’ve managed to embarrass the Penguins, not only on the scoreboard, but they’ve brought out Pittsburgh’s true colors as well, with several folks finding their way to the locker room early on Sunday, more coming from the Pens’ side of things.

Before these playoffs started, the Penguins were a very sexy Stanley Cup pick, with many viewing them as the favorite in the Eastern Conference. That has obvious changed now, but have the Flyers taken over as the clear favorite with what they’ve managed to do in these three games?

The favorites out of the EC are the Rangers.

im worried better team in defence will shut us down like rangers do.

But it was usually close game, so theres still hope.

And lets not forget playoffs are completely different game, we got some playoff specialists(hello danny)

and team must be pretty well tuned after beating pens (supposedly cup contenders) 3 times

i would like to think of us as the underdogs, as we were initially thought of in the Pitt series.

Retarded article. The Series is not even over. If they do advance and face Boston, the Bruins will thoroughly embarass us if the Flyers don't tighten up the back end and get better goaltending from Bryz.

I hate these knee-jerk reactionary articles. The Rangers should still be the favorites to come out of the East if anybody bothered to watch the regular season. The Flyers do have a good shot to take the conference, but there's no way they should be the odds-on favorites. There's still a lot of hockey to be played to start talking about stuff like this.

Probably 3rd right now in the east behind Boston and NY.

Flyers can handle Boston.

Boston won't be able to hang on in OT to push the SO.

We easily have asserted ourselves as #2 behind the NYR.

Let's have some solid defensive showings first, before we think about advancing past the second round. It will be interesting to see how the next round will play out (assuming we'll get past the Penguins), if we will continue with this type of play, or if we will adjust and play more like we did back in March.

Definitely not even close to favorites. NY/Boston are two teams that could easily beat us.

Never, ever underestimate the champs. I think Boston is just as, if not more, dangerous as the Rangers.

Not looking forward to it. At all. The Rangers are not a team the Flyers can fall behind 2-0 or 3-0 and expect to come back. That Henrik Lundqvist guy is pretty good. I mean, did anyone see what he did to Ottawa last night? I must have counted at least 10 "wow, that's a goal against basically every other goalie in the league" saves that Hank made.

With our defense and goaltending? No. Bryz needs to be better. He's made good saves, but he's been leaky. The defense has been doing who knows what at times.

The Bruins aren't winning anything this year. They look as embarrassing as the Canucks did last year with all those loose tempers and diving this year.

No. We can't beat the Rangers so how are we going to even get to the finals unless somebody else can knock them out . We were the worst possible draw for the Pens as they just don't match up against us. If the Pens & Rangers had swapped spots then we are likely the team in the east staring down getting swept & the Pens still look like the favorite to come out of the east.

We are a young team and are playing great in this series but both the Bruins & Rangers will present a real problem for us as they will play much better defense and get better goaltending than the Pens in this series. CAN we beat either of them? Sure. However I'd give both of them the advantage over us right now.

This is correct.

It took them 3 games to solve a rookie goalie and the Caps defensive zone play for crying out loud.

Send a message via AIM to Juicy Couturier*
At this point it's got to be NYR, Boston, Philly, NJ, Florida, OTT, Pitt.

Exactly. If any team can come back from 3 games down, it's Pitt.

They can but they won't..right now they aren't much of a team.

At most they can pull off a couple of more wins (tomorrow and maybe the game in Pitt). I hope they don't but they don't have enough to win 4 in a row IMO that is for sure...

Our forwards need to play better defence as well. It's ridiculous to have a 19 year old as the best defensive forward on the team. But I don't think Lavi really worries about it much and unless we score 4 goals a game vs the likes of NY and Bos, it's a huge problem.

This is ****ing hysterical. Now all the people who picked the Penguins in 5 and to go on and win the cup are now frantically going to predict the Flyers cup run. Give it a rest you assclowns. Just admit you were completely wrong about this matchup for now, and worry about the next rounds when they line up.

And the answer is no.

I like that the Flyers have not only made the Penguins look like frauds but also the media and Las Vegas who picked the Pengirls to win it all...

Ok...it's not over yet and don't want to engage in hubris without the Flyers sealing the deal but again can't see the Penguins winning 4 in a row....
