A shtick (Yiddish: שטיק) (or schtick) is a comic theme or gimmick. "Shtick" is derived from the Yiddish word shtik (שטיק), meaning "piece"; the closely related German word Stück has the same meaning. The English word "piece" itself is also sometimes used in a similar context. Another variant is "bits of business" or just "bits"; comic mannerisms such as Laurel and Hardy's fiddling with their ties, or one of them looking into the camera shaking his head while the other one would ramble on. A shtick can also refer to an adopted persona, usually for comedy performances, that is maintained consistently (though not necessarily exclusively) across the performer's career. See Figure 2 for an example

Turned on the radio in my car on the way to work. The Olympics are two days away, the Sox are battling to stay in the playoff race, the Bruins just re-signed Julien and announced Horton is cleared for contact, and Glen Ordway is ranting about... Ocho Cinco?

What do you expect? Guys like Ordway, Dennis, Callahan, and Mikey Adams don't care about the Bruins, or hockey in general. Their attempt to jump on the bandwagon last year during the Stanley Cup run was the definition of the word "pathetic", especially since none of them know the difference between a hockey puck and a urinal cake. And it showed in the ratings last spring and summer. The Bruins could have signed Zach Parise and the only mention of it on the air at 'EEI would be during the sports flashes.

Oh, I know. Not expecting anything. Just thought it was amusing/annoying. I flipped over to music when I realized just what the heck Ordway was talking about. I mean, who gives a **** about Ocho Cinco?

I haven't listened to sports talk radio in weeks. Can't wait for the Olympics to start.

I got you. I've been flipping through 98.5, and occasionally WEEI lately. You're not missing much. I've been listening mostly to the TSN stations in Toronto and Montreal. With the Redsox being the only one of the 4 major sports teams in New England playing right now (and doing mediocre at that), sports radio talk hasn't been that great. Both stations have said essentially the same thing about the team and Bobby V, everyday for the last 2 weeks. It'll be nice when the Pats preseason rolls around. I'm not the biggest fan of Gresh and Zo, but they do provide some good insight, especially with various position battles going on in training camp. At least preseason games will give us something to watch...even though the starters will only be in for a short period of time.

Yeah, that's why I've been keeping it off. is what they do best, and I can do without that.

We have the Olympics coming up, then we go to Disney World, and then (hopefully) Bruins training camp is on the near horizon. The less I listen to EEI (I can't get Sports Hub) the more I realize I don't miss it.

So one of the rare times I tune into T&R this morning and they are previewing the Buffalo Bills.

Can someone explain that one to me?

Could be worse. I heard Gresh rapping so I changed the station. Came back in a few and heard Tanguay rapping.

Yep, you guessed it...changed the station again.

Do they really think anyone wants to hear that?

Exactly. Can't even listen to most of it any longer. It's so bad. Even with Felger and Mazz, I find myself putting on my own music depending on the topic.

However, if McAdam is on any show, or Johnston & Flynn then I listen.

Its a good day when T&R go on vacation.

How McAdam is not on the radio more is beyond me. His hockey knowledge is almost on par with his baseball knowledge.

I once remember a week of sports radio (pre Sports Hub) where the Big O was on vacation. It was Sheppard, McAdam, and Buckley.

Awesomeness. Mostly talk about my 2 favorite sports, baseball and hockey.

When T&R were on vacation a couple of weeks ago, I was in sports radio heaven. Johnston & Flynn filled in and my morning commute was filled with actual insightful sports talk. How they don't have a regular gig on air during the week is beyond me.

The only thing I can think of is that the local teams are now on to their shtick so they won't go on their show and now they have to resort to things like calling someone about Buffalo.

Kinda like last year(2011) when the Celtics got knocked out of the playoffs and Weei had to resort to talking Bruins after barely mentioning them until the Tampa series...and somehow managed to get calls about them

But ya, wow, Buffalo? Didn't see that one coming. I'm surprised it wasn't Fred going on some sort of rant about the Jets.
When they traded for Tebow, he went absolutely ballistic, and swore he'd never root for the Jets again. But given the fact that he has constant mood swings, me thinks he was just caught up in the moment.
