Very true...both Little and Burmistrov gained weight in the years they made the jump to the NHL, and in both cases it impacted their speed (which what had made them effective in the OHL).

The Jets development camp began today. Last season when they sent Scheifele back to Barrie in late Oct he weighed just 176 lbs. He reportedly weighed in at 192 today and the goal is to add more prior to camp.

There is a bit of a video interview here...

Edit: More here...

Methinks Aaron is more likely to see U-18 action befoe he gets a crack at U-20.

He was kicked out of a Summer League in Brampton a number of weeks back because he proceeded to beat the kid he was fighting with the kid's own helmet, in the head.

Lemieux looks like he won't be breaking his NCAA commitment but who knows I guess time will tell if he can stay committed.

congrats on the signing of Perlini. By far the most talented player in the draft after McDavid. You have a special player there enjoy your years with him

When challenged by tough boys, this kid won't go. Seen him play many times, cheap shot artist. Should stick to hockey, pretty decent player.

Agreed.

Have seen many more incidents of this type of behaviour since he arrived in Canada from Phoenix. Play the game and respect everyone and he will be fine. Good luck to him in terms of maturing.

I only saw Perlini once at the rookie camp. Does anybody with more experience watching him know what kind of player he is and who he would compare to?

A brief summary on Perlini written by Sean Lafortune.

I disagree, the best 96 is Joshua Ho-sang but I do like Perlini's potential and I expect him to have a good career in Barrie.

Perlini has a really high ceiling but he is also very raw....he is the a top 3 skater in the draft...he will be a very good OHL er

the off season has not gone the Colts's way....Lemieux is headed to green bay but if he is not happy there he has the option to come back at any time...and the Colts will try again next summer to sign him. Garcia will get done..no worries.

Shore is also headed to maine by all accounts

so even though Perlini has been given Beyers' number, I expect Beyers back barring a lockout. We don't have the offense we thought we were going to.

I am also excited to see what Justin Scott has...I think he is the kind of kid who can really surprise this year.

Geesch....sounds like he'll be in Barrie sooner than later when he gets kicked out of the NCAA!
Not sure if he'll mix well with Dave Branch either!

If you guys get Scheifele back, and given the likelihood of a lockout it seems you might, you are getting back a new and improved version. He has been through a ton of nutritional and physical work with the Jets over the past few months, and some sports psychology sessions recently as well.

Here is a link to a camp recap that shows a bunch of interview and workout video that features him. He looks huge now, relatively speaking in comparison to his recent past anyway, look at his neck. On the ice he appeared incredibly fast and almost had a swagger to his step; am not entirely sure if he will be strong enough physically to compete against men full-time this fall yet though.

Watch the first two videos here...

Here is what the Jets AHL coach had to say about him...
http://video.jets.nhl.com/videocente...ed-share-video

The GM also complimented his commitment midway through this interview.

You guys have a potential beast on your hands if he returns to Barrie.

The chances of Ekblad getting a WJC camp invite are slim. Having said that, if he comes out early and excels, and someone goes down with an injury, he might get lucky. No need to rush him into it though. It's big ice in Russia this season - not sure it's an ideal fit for him. I wish him all the best though.

I personally thing the big ice suits his game just fine! He has amazing gap-awareness and lots of speed. If he has a big start he may get a camp invite. It's incredibly hard to make that team as a 16 year-old though.

some of you I am sure are familiar with the Carnavale summer hockey league that a lot of OHLers partake in. The Barrie Colts perennially have a team. and this link take you to their roster where you can see who is playing and how they are doing...I have been to a few games and some players have looked very good....

have a look.

I think Carnevale is generally a good Summer league for OHL kids but the Sundays have suffered in two ways:

1. Too many teams past 2 years, especially this year with too many Midget players (maybe having a Midget loop would solve that leaving OHL and Tier 2 players or maybe Midget/T2 players stay together and have an CHL only league

2. A lot of OHLers went to Wednesday which is pretty much all OHLers.

Also, do NOT put stock in stats from the league as some individual players somehow have more assists for example than entire teams have combined assists. I know someone once said it's more important to know the Refs and Time keepers than anyone else...lol. Shinnie leagues are hard to gauge regardless but a lot of Tier 2 teams would use Carnevale league to assess general skill level and hockey acumen, but nothing replaces real games at any level.

You miss the point, Carnovale runs this to make a buck, more teams more bucks!

Yes, points mean nothing as accuracy is out to lunch.

My son plays and is enjoying the bump up in speed and skill level from minor midget. Alot of the minor midget players just entering this summer league find it useful in terms of acclimatizing themselves to playing against bigger, stronger, faster players.

As a once a week summer league to keep the legs going and generally not alot of nonsense (trouble-makes get kicked out) it serves its purpose.
