What would you do as GM?

So, if you were Bryan Murray, and you had to run the Sens, what would you do this offseason?

Keep things realistic, and try and keep our internal cap in mind as well.
No trading for Crosby/Stamkos/Ovi or whatever. I'll start.

Michalek - Spezza - Hemsky
MacArthur - Turris - Ryan
Hoffman - Zibanejad - Stone
Greening - Smith - Neil

Methot - Karlsson
Phillips - Ceci
Cowen - Gryba
Wiercioch

Anderson
Lehner

I'd keep Jason Spezza in Ottawa, this would help us resign Hemsky/Michalek and keep our top line in tact. If Jason wants to move (Which he probably doesn't), I'd move him for a top 6 winger or a top 4 defender (Enstrom/Kane/M.Staal). If we don't keep Spezza than we would have a lot of money to work with since we'd lose Hemsky/Michalek salary as well. With the money, I'd make a serious run at Mike Cammaleri, offering 5.25M for 3-4 Years. If we can't sign him then we resign Michalek for 3.5M-4M.

The ideal Spezza trade would be Spezza + Something Small for Brassard + M.Staal, we sign Brassard for 1-2 Years so he can be a stop gap player in our top 6 until Zibanejad is ready to play on the 2nd line. He's from Hull so I'm sure he'd like to play in Ottawa.

I'd package Wiercioch + Greening + Pick for Marcus Foligno, Colin is getting paid way too much for his role and Wiercioch is paid a little too much because of the fact he rarely plays and when he does, he plays sheltered minutes. I don't know if they'd move Foligno but it would be ideal for us. If we can't get that deal done than we should try and unload Greening and sign a cheap player (Maybe Carcillo?). If MacLean won't play Wiercioch then we should just move him out for a pick or something, he's a good puck mover and would shine somewhere else.

Pageau reminds me of a young Briere but he never gets a chance to play with good players. Always plays with Greening/Neil/Condra/Kassian and it's not helping him at all. They don't have any offensive ability so he's forced to slow down because of them, so he should get a chance on the 3rd line. He's going to play on the wing but it's better than playing on the 4th with guys who can't set up proper plays.

So our offence would look like:

MacArthur - Turris - Ryan
Michalek/Cammy - Brassard - Stone
Hoffman - Zibanejad - Pageau
Foligno/Carcillo - Smith - Neil
Condra

Now onto defence.
Karlsson doesn't really have a stable partner, this year he played 48% with Methot, and about 42% with Cowen/Phillips. All real Norris winners need someone to at least match their minutes. EK Played 70% of his minutes with Kuba during his norris year. Methot is really effective when he plays 20-22 minutes but a guy like Karlsson is capable of playing 27-28 minutes a game. Marc Staal can play a good 25-26 minutes a night and his style would work well with a guy like EK. Having Methot on the 2nd pair would our 2nd pair look so much better, Ceci gets a guy who can actually play decent defense and it would let him play a more offensive game. Jared Cowen struggled this season so I think we should start him off on the 3rd pair, he gets to play less minutes (16-18 Minutes) and he wouldn't have much pressure on him. Gryba had a good season and is a good player to keep on the bottom pair, we should resign him to a 1 year deal for around 1M. This would be a very physical pairing that could match up against good 2nd/3rd lines. MacLean probably wouldn't start them in the offensive zone because they're poor skaters and wouldn't have the ability to get back if there's a turn over. They'd have to receive no offensive minutes. Phillips/Borowiecki can swap in every couple games, why'd we resign Phillips

Staal - Karlsson
Methot - Ceci
Cowen - Gryba
Phillips/Borowiecki

I don't know how much Lehner wants but I think BM would go for a bridge deal (Something like 2.1M for 2 years). Robin would take the next step this year and plays about 50 games with Anderson playing around 32. I'd keep Anderson beyond this year for about 2.5M, it would give our many young goalies time for one of them to become a backup.

Lehner
Anderson

I think we keep Spezza, he could be a 75-85 point threat and we have no one to replace his leadership. I love him in Ottawa but if we can get back a top 4 defender then we should move him. So yeah.

ALSO: I'd fire our assistant coaches and try and call up Luke Richardson from Bingo. He's got all the experience needed to guide our young defenders and knows many of the players on the roster. I don't know who else we could hire but Luke is someone I'd love to see coaching in Ottawa.

Fire myself realizing I'm a Dinosaur!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

I've just realized I've been using the rotating door method of players and coaches and were no better than we were in 2008 when I first took over as GM

I'd spend most of my time working on player/personnel stuff. Things like signing guys to contracts, trading players, drafting, etc. That's what I would do.

Buyout, waive or trade: Greening, Condra & Phillips

Let Michalek walk if he's not open to a short cheap contract. Try to sign Hemsky to a 3-4 year 4-5 mil contract.

Solve UFA summer from hell now. Re-sign Ryan, Methot and Mac. Trade Spezza (assuming he wants out, or wont sign reasonable term contract). Only UFA I let enter the season is Anderson. Goalies get little in return, and I don't think he's viewed as a bonafied #1 by a lot of gm's. Maybe re-sign Anderson after the year if he's open to bridging gap with Lehner potentially as a starter or 1A.

RFA's: Re-sign Hoffman, Da Costa & Gryba to 1 or 2 year one-way deals, all get roster spots. Lehner gets 3-4 year 2-3 mil bridge contract.

Graduate full time: Hoffman, Stone, Pageau, Da Costa. Boro probably as the 7th or 8th dman.

Trade for big top 6 forward and legit top 4 dman. Assets to use: Spezza, Prince, Wiercioch, draft picks.

Free agent targets: Callahan, Vanek, Cammy, Moulson.

Maybe juggle some of the coaching duties, I didn't like a lot of what I saw this year but dont want drastic personnel changes. Perhaps add an experienced assistant to help the D.

Switch home and away jerseys to heritage jerseys. Design new 3rd jersey with crest and colors from early 90's.

Keep Spezza and sign Hemsky.

Clear some cap by letting Michalek walk and trade Condra and Greening for anything.

Ryan Spezza Hemsky
MacArther Turris Stone
Hoffman Zibanajad Lazar
Grant Smith Neil

Methot Karlsson
NIskanen Ceci
Cowen Weircioch

Anderson
Lehenr

I wouldn't have signed Phillips.

I'd dump Greening on any sucker who made an offer.

Re-sign Hemsky to a 5 year 5M per year contract.

Re-sign Spezza on July 1st to a 6 year deal worth 6.5M per year.

Michalek walks. I'd target Mark Fayne and Marcel Goc as free agents.

Hoffman-Spezza-Hemsky
MacArthur-Turris-Ryan
Puempel/Prince/Schneider/Grant-Zibanejad-Stone
Goc-Smith-Neil
Condra

Methot-Karlsson
Cowen-Fayne
Wiercioch-Ceci
Gryba

Anderson
Lehner

I'm also open to trade talks for Anderson. I'd really like to lock up Lehner for at least 3 years.

I would have offered 9MM and our first next year for st Louis still traded for Hemsky, not resigned Phillips and went after a mid pairing defenseman.

Our team would have made the playoffs.

If I were Murray?
I'd resign and fall on my sword after losing Alfie and Spezza in consecutive seasons. Time for a new voice up top, Dorion is going to have one hell of time under these budget constraints.

Only way I see us being able to dump Greening is by adding value imo. Maybe Greening + 2nd or 3rd to Buffalo for a 7th or something.

I couldn't handle being a GM under Melnyk. No way.
Would resign and let the public know just how much of a nutcase the guy is.

Best one I've seen yet. Maybe swap Hoff for Prince or something cuz we need NHL ready talent to fill the roster next year and will especially need PP help when Spezza leaves.

Yea, that's the thing. They'd probably say hell no to Prince instead.

Hoffman has potential to be 50+ winger so that's why I think they even consider it.
