Offseason discussion continued (Contract chart in Post #1)

Keep in mind that cap projections are *extremely* sketchy right now with the CBA set to expire. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Yes there will be teams interested in Paul Martin. I don't think there's any doubt about that.

Good hockey player, bad Penguins player.

Well, luckily we can keep him if need be with the cap likely going up and Niskanen+Despres+Strait coming on the cheap.

But Minnesota and Tampa are logical destinations. Doubt he has either on his NMC list.

I thought the NMC was just for him being sent to the minors. He also has a limited NTC. I think we can still trade him to a team that isn't on his list of destinations he wouldn't go to without getting him to waive anything.

Besides, if he's getting benched here, I can't see why he'd want to stick around.

I totally agree - Paul Martin just doesn't seem to fit into the Penguins system.

I am still trying to make sense of Rob Rossi's random suggestion that Kris Letang would be on the trading block in the off season because his contract would be easy to move and he would get a big return - all the reasons that Letang makes Shero look like a genius because we have him on our roster.

Letang is unique in his skills as a defenseman, and as was seen when he was out of the lineup in during the long stretch as he recovered from a concussion, was sorely missed. He has become the #1 defenseman on the team and Rossi him sound expendable all of the sudden. I know it's Rossi, but I can't seem to get it off my mind.

I agree.

There are so many possibilities between teams desperate for defense or teams that need to get to the cap floor. There's also so much turnover in hockey with head coaches, assistant coaches and management that there's likely somebody that has a connection with Martin in the past that thinks they can work with him in a different defensive system/structure.

Martin can't refuse a trade. Just provide a list of teams he won't go to. I believe it's 8.

He can be moved, I'm not worried. I just hope Despres stays up this postseason, Niskanen proves his worth and Shero sees we have no need for Martin on this team anymore.

Martin out, Nisky replaces him, Despres replaces Nisky's spot.

Everything will then work out. Orpik continues to poop the bed, Orpik out, Strait in.

Huh that limited trade clause will limit Shero, but there's not doubt in my mind that if there is a way Shero will do it.

With the way the league lusts over puck-moving defensemen, I doubt we'll have trouble moving Martin. What worries me more is Shero's refusal to admit his error.

We can't turn this into another Scott Gomez situation. We need to cut the umbelical cord as quickly as possible.

That would be ideal. I think it would also help to have Orpik & Michalek used less 5 on 5 in the future. Maybe drop them down to the second or third pairings. I would like to see Engelland given more time as a result.

Really? Go back to the thread from July 1 2010, you were all jumping for joy and praising Shero for signing Z and Martin. They were good deals too, Martin only got a 500k raise. How was he supposed to know Martin would crap the bed in his second season?

How dare Shero make a mistake. He's only brought in guys like Neal, Kunitz, Dupuis, Niskanen, Cooke, Adams & countless others that have since moved on. Not to mention restocking the prospect pull that was pretty baron at the time.

The demand for top 4 puck movers is high and the supply is low.

Doesn't take an economist to see that martin is easily movable.

Man, if we get rid of Martin and the cap goes to $70m that's $15m to play with on re-signing and signings. :|

I wanted Z and Whitney... Jags didn't want Martin... I think Tender Rip was furious... Etc

Not everyone was happy. But I do recall saying I understood the moves; still do actually.

It is rare you get to sure up your top 4 in one Summer like that in UFA. Top 4 guys don't hit UFA all that often. Which is exactly why some team will want Martin.

Shero seems to bust out the most in UFA... I'm too lazy to do the whole list, but most of his UFAs have been busts aside from Sullivan, Michalek and Sarge.

If I had to put money on it right now I'd say that Shero views this season as a mulligan for Martin and he's back next year.
