Torts the Avery of coaching?..

I get the feeling that Torts seems to be Coach/Avery of the nhl. Is it the ultimate irony or what? Remember how Avery was beeing targeted by the NHL. Has Torts become like Avery in terms of NHL hating him and thus trying to punish the Rangers to kind of curb his brash style the way they did with Avery. He gets fined more for being honest then other coaching for using dirty tactics climbing over the glass etc.

I don't see the comparison other than they both got big mouths.

Torts always plays within the rules. Always sticks up for his players, and tries to make everything about the team(whether good or bad).

Avery was always more or less about himself.

I completely disagree with you.

Tortorella is respected throughout the league, has a Stanley Cup on his resume, shows great respect for the game and his players, and most importantly the referees.

He may not respect the league at times, or the officiating at times, but what coach doesn't? I remember reading somewhere (or maybe it was on 24/7) but learned that Torts actually is very polite and respectful when he speaks to referees and never blows up in their face or makes them look bad, moreso than most other coaches.

Instances where he does call out the officiating or embarrasses one particular official, such as during the Winter Classic, he said he reconciled that and called the ref personally to apologize for an emotional reaction to a game.

He tells things like it is, both to players and to the media. Most people don't do this and that is a disservice in and of itself. If you're playing poorly, he lets you know about it. If you're playing well, he slaps you and the back and tells you great job. You can tell from Ranger player's postgame interviews how they feel about the coach.

Like it or not, the NHL benefits from coaches like Tortorella who have personality and fire -- the type of coaches that can be featured in the media and steal some air time for the league. ESPN often shows Tortorella if he "explodes" on the bench or in a postgame... but they also highlight how when he is very angry at the team, he calls a timeout and the team responds well to his pep talk.

He gets a lot of positive press as well, and I think he's the right guy to handle the difficult media environment associated with coaching in New York.

Could you say any of the above for Avery? Not really.

I didnt mean that he is like Avery as a hockey player I meant Avery as in someone the NHL front office hated and kind of picked on for any little thing. You think its a coincidence the Rangers did not appeal the ruling and made a statement like they did? I don't want to talk about Avery but I hate the fact that Torts is being vilified by the NHL. Say what you want about Avery but he always played within the rules, he had his moments but he was never suspended or disciplined. I repeat I dont want to bring back Avery its only to compare their treatment by the league office.

I miss Avery.
Torts gets fined the most because he gets goated by the media more than anyone else to saying dumb things. He lacks the filter neccessary nto to call out refs, or swear.
I love the soudns bites it creates though.

I'll never forge the story of him yelling at the players for stepping on the logo in the lockerroom. It's a small inconsequential thing but I think it goes a long way to showing his convictions and respect for the franchise/game.

Personally, I love that he's such a hothead.

Nah, I don't think so. Even if some may not like Torts, almost everyone respects him. He's fiery, hardworking, and a great coach. His players love playing for him, the fans love him being the coach of our favorite team.

On the other hand, nobody liked Avery (except some NYR fans). Nobody respected him, he rarely did anything the right way. His coach hated him, the league hates him, officials probably hate him. Hell, I hate him. He's a distraction to the actual game of hockey and doesn't contribute anything but average 4th line minutes.

To sum up...
Torts = widely respected by players and coaches, hardworking, gets results, loved by his players.
Avery = respected by nobody, hated by players and coaches, didn't produce results very often unless he was running his mouth.

Do you know the name of the reporter that Torts owns at the end?

Larry Brooks.

They have/had a long feud even when Torts was coaching in Tampa.

No team wants Avery.

Teams wouldn't mind hiring Tortorella.

IMO he shows tremendous composure in this video. A lesser man says that "he is" challenging Brooksie or belts him in the face.

I think Tort's has one of these at home that looks like Brooks.

while this won't be the most well received comparison around there parts, it is truthful to a considerable degree. torts has gone rogue. when it comes to being tactful with the media and not rocking the boat. he doesn't care about the NHL's marketing strategy or any of the politics, what people think of him, etc.

and yes, he is being consequenced more than other coaches for the same "offenses." a la avery.

After the Penguins thuggery in the playoffs so far, when is the NHL going to give him his money back?

Is Avery retired Lol because brining him up really makes me want him on the ice right about now. Talk about offensive zone time he does that for you. Dont worry i know it wont happen even if its the right thing to do.

Torts coaches to work hard, play smart, be responsible, earn your ice, have self respect, be a mature man.

He coaches the right way.

Avery dove, took dumb penalties, would play dirty and not drop the gloves or turtle when he'd get called on it (unless he wasn't worried about the prowess of his opponent), said ridiculous stuff in the media, made himself the center of attention.

He played the wrong way.

Your comparison is way off, aside from both being outspoken, but that's like saying Anisimov is the Mr. Bean of hockey just because they look alike.
