Why not hire a speed skating coach then?

Because hockey is a contact sport, you don't just skate circles around the ice at top speeds. Sorry if I come off as a ****** but I thought that's pretty clear

Figure skating is not a skating sport either.

You're saying it as speed skaters don't learn skating technique.

I like it. Half the players on this team already have the physicality of a figure skater so they might as well have the skating of a figure skater to go along with it. Seems like a natural fit.

They train to go as fast as possible counterclockwise around a restricted track. Figure skating is limitless. Hockey is limitless. Figure skating has more to do with balance and agility vs. brute force of thigh muscles, strength of the right leg, and drafting behind others.

They should probably teach ballet to soccer (or football for you euros) players.

The technique speed skaters use wouldn't be applicable to a hockey player. The strides are too wide and the player would be too hunched over.

It definitely would be stupid to incorporate speed skating techniques entirely. All I'm saying is that you can always learn a trick or two from other similar sports.

I might be totally wrong. Just thinking out loud.

What everyone else has said, as well as the biggest hurdle is that speed skaters are used to a different blade(length & width),different sharpening procedure (angle and depth) and the runner that a speed skate has is "hinged" in design, allowing the blade to remain in contact with the ice for a longer period of time.

So if we put a figure skater VS a speed skater on the ice, both wearing hockey skates, who would be able to go faster?

If she's going to be the team coach, this is making me ecstatic. Could you imagine if the faster skaters on the team take to her demonstration as well as Luke, Franson, Colborne and CAsh?

Well it's not exactly about speed skating, it's about skating backwards, sideways not exactly north-south. Hockey and figure skating is about pivoting your body to adjust to whatever you are doing.

Honestly, probably the Figure skater, she/he's used to the ice surface and the angles of the arena. If you think about it; the speed skater is in a sport that displays(for the most part) the endurance and methodical edgework of a skater. Even the "speed" (smaller distances, 400m) still do not demand the quick twitch muscle use that figure skater/hockey player would. Not to mention the pivoting and edge work that a figure skater can teach a hockey player. About the 1st question you posed to me , think of how fast a figure skater needs to get to her/his jump to execute a triple (a 1080). Therein lies your answer

Article the the Star.

Hey, she even defines what she can bring to a hockey players skill set for those who seemed confused.

http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/...-playoffs?bn=1

“Every player is different,” she said. “I spend time one-on-one with the players to figure out how to get them stronger, faster, more in balance. We work on every aspect of skating. It’s extremely individual. I do a lot of video analysis. I break down the player’s stride. I work on the finest detail to make them quicker, faster.”
