That seems a little ridiculous. Watching the video Hossa doesn't have the puck for like 2 seconds or less, it's not that late of a hit after possession of the puck. So no I don't see this as a interference violation. Many other instances would not be called interference for delivering a hit 2 seconds or less of puck possession. Maybe there's some charging, but I think intent to injure is not as obvious as other instances.

For instance Asham's 4 game suspension clearly shows intent to injure, much more than this imo.

Wow, did not expect that at all. I thought the Keith on Sedin hit was way worse, and that only got 5 games. Obviously Torres is a repeat offender, but I'm not sure that's really worth 5 times the suspension for a hit that wasn't as bad. I'm perfectly OK with 25 games for a hit like this, but it's around 5 times more than you'd expect based on past rulings, if Torres gets 25 for this then most of the 3 game suspensions Shanny hands out should be 15, most of the 4 games should be 20, etc. The consistency is heavily lacking, for sure.

This makes me wonder if Hossa is hurt a lot worse than we realize. The only way this suspension makes sense to me is if it's in response to a career ending injury on Hossa.

NHL needs to get away from suspending people because a guy gets injured suspend the action not the outcome if hossa wasnt hurt he would of got no games

Hopefully this is the last time he does it, we don't need these guys doing these hits constantly in the NHL.

Weber doesn't have a history of headshots...???

I don't disagree with the Torres suspension, but show some consistency.

Exactly this is the first time he was playing the role of a head hunter.

25 games is excessive, but there are factors outside the hit that are taken into account like Torres' reputation and history

Not excessive in the least.

Well done Shanny.

We had a discussion on this board recently I said players that drive upward towards the head should not be permitted someone here told me that's they correct way to hit.

I disagreed and so does the league.

When you drive upward the target is the head. Torres has done this throughout his career, and got away with those dirty hits. He obviously thought the new rules did not apply to him.

Maybe 25 games will let him get his head straight.

Desjardins estimates that about 40% of the game is captured by Corsi analysis.

The hit warranted no more than 2-4 games if it is judged against all the other suspensions in these playoffs. No way that hit was worse than Hagelins attempt to concuss (and succeeded), the captain of the Sens. No way. At least Torres threw a body check, which probably would have been acceptable in years past. At no time in the history of the game would Hagelin's elbow to Crusty's head have been acceptable. Ditto for the butcher Ashams' cross check to the face of Brayden Schenn.

NHL discipline is atrocious.

You can argue it's not excessive, but it's certainly inconsistent.

Shanahan and the NHL is all over the place with these suspensions. Be tough on every incident, or be lenient on all of them. This random subjection of suspensions makes the league a laughing-stock amongst it's own players.

Just goes to show that the star players get treated differently.
Guys like Toress have no place in the nhl, theyre ruining the game by injuring the great players like Hossa, Crosby, etc. The game is about skill. This is not a game of goonery and dirtiness.

Sounds good. He is a headhunter and a scrub, don't want him in the league at all.

Certainly think after all he's been involved in this is what Torres had coming. Of course at the same time it's not going to stop the big name players that have been pulling their own stunts and getting away with it. Until Shanahan will throw the book at one of them not much will change here.

NHL discipline is atrocious.

The suspension is a joke.....25 games for a slight jump.....everything else about the hit was legal. Ashams hit was a deliberate attempt to injury and he gets 4 games.

This was clearly retribution for being honest....he stated previously that he did not intent to change the way he hits..... this is the NHL making an example of a player who speaks his mind.

6-8 games would have been way more then enough.

Or thinks twice about hitting at all.

The hit was late, left his feet to charge at Hossa, the head was the principle point of contact and Hossa was badly injured. Already has 2 head hits earlier this season and has other head hits in previous years. Torres got what he deserved as a player like him has not seem to learn how to hit legally.
