Nate, the North Stars averaged 13.9k (out of 15k) in '93, their best season in almost a decade...are you talking about a different season?
Yes, the years around the Stanley Cup season - thought the 8K was later but still, those numbers aren't great.

The North Stars also handed out fistfulls of tickets that last season. I worked at MoA that year and saw the multiple 3 inch stacks of tickets they gave to Camp Snoopy (each game) to give out to any employees that wanted them.

Almost every game night I didn't work I went to the game, never sat farther than 15 rows from the ice, and never paid a dime for the seats. Many games I had 2+ sets of tickets so we could choose which seats we wanted once there.

Just a guess, but I bet they gave similar stacks to the anchor stores as well as the general MoA office/management. I think they were operating under the 'get them in the door and hope to make some concession money off them' model.

Because there isn't the previously existing fanbase to draw upon.

The issue isn't declining attendance because it's not declining. In fact, as I pointed out, it has increased 3.6% since two years ago, despite a weak economy. Maybe the North Stars had a jump in attendance for the last year to "enjoy it while it lasts" but they had a whole state of fans. Maybe they weren't dedicated fans (which led to the low previous attendance) but the fan base existed. That's not the case in Phoenix. You largely have snow birds (who have affiliations with their hometown hockey teams rather than the Coyotes) and non-hockey people. Those non-hockey people aren't going to jump on a sinking ship. They're not going to give up their Cards, Diamondbacks, or Suns tickets to buy tickets for the Coyotes when they're inundated with news that the team won't be here next year.

I thought the PHX-NSH game was suppose to be on CNBC? All I see when I turn on CNBC is some dude trying to sell stuff and it says WHT in the top right corner.

I see Phoenix-Nashville. You sure you're on the right channel?

I bet it's some more bull **** here at Hamline. It says CNBC is channel 21 and all I see when I turn it on that channel is some whacko trying to sell religious crap.

The 8K season was 1991, which was the year the entire team was gutted in a lop-sided "San Jose Gets To Take Half of the North Stars" expansion draft.

I could be completely wrong, but I always assumed that was the catalyst for that year's drop in attendance, which is really more of an outlier if you look at the general trends.

Huh, that's really interesting. I had never heard that.

These sound more like problems with Phoenix itself than anything that has to do with relocation rumors. Which is why I think maybe it's time to pull the plug.

And last summer we finally got even.

Speaking of playoffs, do we need to put Gabby on the side of a milk carton?

I'm just gonna throw out that I called that one. (My only mistake was assuming the Rangers couldn't beat the Sens without his contributions.) I can't find it in the predictions thread but I distinctly remember saying somewhere, "I have to go with Ottawa, because if there's one thing I'm confident in, it's Marian Gaborik's ability to choke in the playoffs."

He and Walz were such forces in 2003. Haven't seen that Gabby since then...in the postseason that is.

I was actually looking forward to finally being able to watch a game tonight too. Hamline seems to be doing everything they can to stop me from watching hockey.

After 5 periods of hockey, the Rangers and Caps are starting to look like the Wild.
