I would too. Ovechkin is a strangely wired player though. The way his game is powered, you have to wonder if he can truly play any other way than how he does. That's not really meant as a criticism; his game can also be absolutely remarkable because of his unique energy, but it also means his coachability is questionable in some ways.

I'm also not sure about Hunter's ability to pull off something like that. The lack of communication just troubles me. I think he might have the right attitude to do it, but just wouldn't be able to be proactive in the right ways to make it happen.

i dont think dan girardi relishes the idea of another playoff series attached to 8 at the hip.
i'd be interested to see how braden colburn held up to what chara and seidenburg were getting. i am not even sure who nj would use on him.

either way backstrom and semin are not seeing them

With any luck the Devils would try and put Volchenkov against him. Granted, that's a matchup that has been tough for Ovi in the past, but the A-train has been horrible this postseason.

Seidenberg and Chara are a special pairing. Only St Louis and Nashville really have comparable personnel.

Surviving Boston was huge. If 28, 8, 19 and 90 keep playing like they are, goals will come.

Jersey should be a cakewalk by all accounts. Kovalchuk seems to be playing with a torn groin, A-Train I'm pretty sure had a concussion even before getting headshot twice, I'm honestly kinda worried they're letting him play. Beyond Volchenkov their defense is completely underwhelming, their forwards are erratic, and Brodeur hasn't been a game stealing goalie by any stretch.

Now that I've went out and said they'll probably stomp us though.

Less passing, more shooting from 90 please. His preference for the pass over the shot resulted in a 2 on 1 in the 3rd period. I was screamming "No, no, no" at the TV when he made that pass, and the dog looked at me wondering what he'd done.

Gotta be a Swedish thing. Backstrom had the same problem his first two years.

What about Jordan Staal to DC? He's probably on his way out of Pittsburgh... I'd give them Brouwer+(pick?) for him.

I think Pittsburgh asks for more than that.. Alzner/Carlson would probably be involved and that's not worth it.

Does Kuznetsov make his way over next year? Does Eakin earn a spot out of camp?
If these 2 do make the roster out of camp, Sorjgen makes the team. Where does that let MattyP, Halpern (out), Aucoin, Knuble??

If those changes happen, what are the chances to upgrade the defense, that badly needs some help?
Schultz - horrible/slow
Wideman - lost on the ice
Hamrlik - slow as molasses
Erskine - slow
Green- defensive liability in new system

That is 4 out of the top 6 on defense that have their issues.

Opinion on where we go next year?

You have to figure Wideman will be gone, and Green re-signs. Orlov is the obvious replacement. If Schultz is the 7/8, I can live with that (though the salary would be ridiculous).

Hamr is actually proving to be a good playoffs D, but they need depth.

I am guessing that Knuble is done, unless he proves to bring the cup or Conf. Championship, in which case, they offer a one-year 'final tour' contract.

the caps dont agree with your pov on green. i doubt hamrlik's speed is an issue for them either. he was slow when they signed him. he was signed to play with green and my all accounts green/hamrlik has been very strong,

erskine stays as a 7. orlov probably takes wideman's slot. that leaves schultz. i see mcphee moving him if he can and finding a short timer veteran for the 3rd pair with orlov.

changing out 4 of 6 defense isnt going to happen.

hammer and green are fine. i don't think wideman will be back due to price

orlov is ready now therefore will be even better next year (unless he suffers from 74 disease)

that leaves one open spot assuming they dump 55. should have enough cap room to fill that spot with a decent, mobile vet

All good replies on the defense, still think Hammer and Schultz are to slow, but what are your thoughts on offensive comments??

I expect Kuz and Eakin to both make the roster, and Sjogren to do what Eakin did this year, getting 20-25 games in. Knuble won't be back, Aucoin should be back to Hershey, and Halpern and MattyP are toss-ups...i would hope the forward roster looks like this:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Johansson-Laich/Free Agent-Kuznetsov
Chimera-Perrault/Laich-Eakin/Brouwer
Hendricks-Beagle-Ward/Eakin
Halpern-Sjogren

I'm hopeful Kuznetsov comes over. I don't see the Caps resigning any of our current UFAs except for Semin. I'm in the minority on this, but with Holtby's play (I understand that it's a small sample size) I would entertain the idea of using Neuvirth as possible trade bait and bring in a vet goalie to back up Holtby. The Capitals just don't have enough assets that I would be willing to trade and that might be attractive to other teams, hence why I bring up Neuvirth. Schultz isn't going to get you much but perhaps packaging him with Neuvy along with that 2nd round pick we have from Colorado/Boston might work. Still keen on the Capitals geting Tyutin in order to pair him with Orlov. Perhaps a Neuvirth/Schultz/Eakin and '13 first rounder for Columbus's Tyutin and Mason. I think this season may have been a career season for Perreault so he may be an attractive asset for some team as well

Ovechkin - Backstrom - Kuznetsov
Semin - ? - Brouwer
Laich - MAJO - Chimera
Tootoo - Beagle - Ward

Sorjgen/Hendricks

Hamrlik/Green
Alzner/Carlson
Tyutin/Orlov
Erskine

Holtby
Mason

He's soon to be 24 years old and has one more year remaining on his 2.9 a year contract and then he's a RFA. I don't see it as a risk and it may be attractive for the Jackets to work a deal with us for Tyutin if we are willing to take Mason off of their hands.

I would take Mason off their hands if the plan is to bury him in the AHL where he belongs.

Under impression from "sharks firesale" thread... What do you guys think about Douglas Murray? Guy that was going at it with Ovechkin every time they met... I think he'd be a nice fit with Orlov.
Hamrlik - Green
Alzner - Carlson
Murray - Orlov
And I think his price is far from high... One year left, cap-friendly Schultz-like 2.5M.
