We have room for at least one more forward assuming that both Butch and Lats are retained and healthy. If either is out, we have even more room:

Heatley-Koivu-Granlund
Lats/Bouchard-Cullen-Setoguchi
[Open]-Brodziak-Clutterbuck
[Open]-Powe-Kassian/Johnson

Now as for whether lines work well is another question, but we do have space to add at least one more forward.

Doubt he signs with us but if he did I guess I'd consider it kind of a make-up for just missing out on signing Da Costa last year.

I'll continue to be that guy until we resolve this issue, but he's an undersized forward. Looking at our prospect pool, the guys on our roster, and guys we might theoretically be able to nab in free agency, we're way too small on the front end. We have size in Heatley (who is getting old and declining) and Kassian (who is clearly a 12th/13th forward) but otherwise we only have Mikko topping 6-2. The average NHL forward is 6'1" (according to the first random google result). Lats and Brodziak are 6'2". That means we have 5 forwards of "above average height," and none of them are significantly above average. PMB and Clutterbuck are listed at 5'10", Zucker and Powe are 5'11". Seto is 6'. Johnson and Cullen come in right at average with 6'1". We all know how undersized Granlund is. Of our other prospects, Coyle (6'2") and Bulmer (6'3") have a little size, but Larsson (6') and Phillips (6'1") aren't going to be pushing up the team average.

I think what we have now is acceptable, but it's right at the bottom of that range. While we're not really in a position to be picky, can we really afford to target below-average sized forwards? I'll give Parise (5'11") a pass because he's so high end, but we're getting a little too small for my liking.

I don't really care about size if he's got the talent. So long as guys like Briere, St Louis, Datsyuk, Ennis, Roy, etc all can succeed in the NHL, I'll take whoever.

Ya, those gray helmets are pretty cool. The yellow sweaters and helmets with flames on them for the assumed leading scorer? Not so much...

I asked Russo about him earlier in the day:

Quote:
Me: Have any insight on the Wild supposedly offering Damien Brunner (Swiss) a contract?
Russo: great player, many say potential top-6 fwd. half the teams in the league will offer him a contract at least

No, he's not. He's a Kesler/Staal type.

Right now, given his age and his health I would stick Kesler and Staal above him.

In fact, factoring in his contract, his age, his point production, and his health, these are the guys I would rank above Koivu:

Sidney Crosby
Gino Malkin
Niklas Backstrom
Patrice Bergeron
Logan Couture
Ryan Getzlaf
Claude Giroux (though I think he swings out to the wing)
Anze Kopitar
Mike Richards
Brad Richards
Henrik Sedin
Tyler Seguin
Jeff Skinner
Eric Staal
Steven Stamkos
Jordan Staal
John Tavares
Jonathan Toews
Jason Spezza
Joe Thornton
Henrik Zetterberg
Jeff Carter
Ryan Kesler
David Krejci
Joe Pavelski
Paul Stastny

notice how when he was gone we had NO one to replace him or even bar the door long enough, he came back and the team started playing good again.
Notice how when the team lost Bouchard and Lats we couldn't score a goal to save our lives? Does that make them top line wingers?

Quote:
WE could have lost Cullen and Brodz and made it work but we couldn't do anything about Koivu.
Cullen maybe, Brodie nope.

Quote:
We are fine for a number 1 center, he may not be the elite all star stud center ala Crosby or Datsyuk but he is a very solid number 1 guy. Whole year of Mikko and Wild were in the playoffs easy.
I don't believe that at all. Minnesota struggled even when Koivu was in the lineup.

We are not fine for a number 1 center. He's a solid 2nd line center but a mediocre top line center.

You know where Koivu ranked? 49th...Backstrom, who played less games than him scored just as many points as Koivu.

These players are not centers.

Quote:
Claude Giroux (though I think he swings out to the wing)
Giroux is almost exclusively a centerman.

Zetterberg is used at center when Babcock splits him and Datsyuk up... Otherwise, he is Datsyuk's winger.

Tyler Seguin - meanwhile, back in the real world...
Jeff Skinner - nope
Eric Staal - probably
Steven Stamkos - yes

John Tavares - yes
Jonathan Toews - intangibles
Jason Spezza - about equal
Joe Thornton - okay
Henrik Zetterberg - probably
Jeff Carter - nope

Joe Pavelski - nope
Paul Stastny - nope

I concluded after claiming Koivu was not a #1 center that his production over the last few years proved he was a #1 center, although probably in the 20-30 range of centers in the NHL.

Comparing Koivu with Jordan Staal...

Looking at even strength scoring stats...

2011-12
Koivu 9+16 (55) = 0.16 / 0.45
Staal 17+21 (62) = 0.27 / 0.61

2010-11
Koivu 9+30 (71) = 0.13 / 0.55
Staal 8+13 (42) = 0.19 / 0.50

2009-10
Koivu 13+29 (80) = 0.16 / 0.53
Staal 18+23 (82) = 0.22 / 0.50

I think they're pretty even actually.

PP:

2011-12
Koivu 2+13 (55) = 0.04 / 0.27 ~ 3:31
Staal 5+2 (62) = 0.08 / 0.11 ~ 1:59

2010-11
Koivu 7+15 (71) = 0.10 / 0.31 ~ 3:13
Staal 3+4 (42) = 0.07 / 0.17 ~ 3:09

2009-10
Koivu 8+20 (80) = 0.10 / 0.35 ~ 3:27
Staal 1+4 (82) = 0.01 / 0.05 ~ 1:54

On the PP Koivu is way more productive, but then again he's getting #1 PP unit ice time whereas Jordan is usually #2.

I'd still think Koivu's more valuable on the whole, but I'm not sure Jordan is very far behind him. $5.5-6m per is what I'd expect.

Here's a bit of worthless info but its our off-season so its at least worth posting I guess..

My Mom's boyfriend lives in Bear Path & is next door neighbors with Jason Blake. Well apparently they went golfing together today..

Jason Blake said that he really wants to play for Minnesota & Minnesota only. He said that he's hoping that the Wild will pick him up as an FA on just a one or two year contract to finish out his career in his home state. Apparently his agent is going to be working on it when FA opens. He said that if Minnesota doesn't pick him up he will most likely just retire because if he cant play for us he's over it. He said he really just wants to finish out his career in Minnesota..

I doubt we pick him up but like I said, I figured I might as well post it..

Enough of the Minnesota has-beens. Parise is the only Minnesotan I'm interested in signing.

Blake will be 39 when hockey season begins. Sounds like retirement would be a good option.

Just like we shouldn't give preferential contracts to players because they're Minnesotan, we also shouldn't dismiss people for being Minnesotan. Blake is a solid NHLer (even had a 40 goal season before the cancer!) and, if this hearsay is true, we could get him for an absolute bargain. Veteran presence, Masterton winner (i.e., character guy), one-time 40-goal-scorer... for $1-2M on a 1 year deal, why the hell not?

If he comes cheap and will take a one year deal, why not. Not like were overflowing with talent and theres no room for a veteran presence.
