Does Lennart Petrell have a future with the oilers

I was impressed with his play on the 3rd and 4th line and hope he has a future with the oilers. Double checking a few things, he becomes a UFA on July 1 and while obviously he wlll not be a top 6 player--he fits perfectly in the bottom 6.

Does he have a future with the oilers or are they going to let him walk on July 1st.

I know that with both Tambo and Renney not having contracts, that there maybe more pressing needs, but I think keeping him around would be a good thing.

What do you guys think? is his days numbered with the oilers?

Bring the man back. Ideal 4th liner imo, provided the money is reasonable.

Solid fourth liner with good size, but lacks toughness. But I say he's a keeper

I have a feeling he's gone.. Unless Jones is traded, which is the guy who should be the 4th line winger.

He was a pretty good pk'er and defensively responsible. He really wasn't a liability out there, and I surely was impressed how much he hit.

I wouldn't mind if he came back, but since Eager and Jones are still on contract, Petrell might be on the outs, especially if Yakupov draws in, another winger to drop everybody down.

I think there's a dman for the coyotes that might disagree with your toughness assessment.

Put me in the Petrell-fan category.

I would keep him but with Yaks coming in and if they bring back Smyth that's leaves very little room at the bottom. We would have MPS,Jones,Smyth,Eager,Harti,Lander and maybe even Hordichuk

They should bring him back, which probably means they will let him go.

I think they'll being him back next season
Not sure about his future beyond that though as there are limited spots in the bottom 6 and other prospects (harti) may fill them.

I think Hordichuk is gone. There may not be a deal to be made with Smyth--who likely wants top 6 money and minutes. With the potential of drafting Yakupov, Hemsky fresh off signing a 2 year contract, and all the talk about trying Hall at centre, I think the writing is pretty much on the wall for garner who's a RFA. I think he will be a bait in a trade for a defenseman.
If Smyth is signed, he takes a spot on the 3d line and one of the AHL eligible forwards (Paajarvi/Hartikainen) head to Oklahoma city:

This is how I see the roster on the opening night:

Eberle-Hall-Hemsky
Paajarvi/Hartikainen-RNH-Yakupov
Smyth/Hartikainen/Paajarvi-Horcoff-Jones
Eager-Belanger-Lander
Petrell

I want to see him back. Perfect grinding 4th liner with a decent, heavy shot. Always seemed like a little kid on the ice.

Petrell made me a fan of his style of hockey.

Great 4th liner I would be sad if they didn't re-sign him.

4th liner? more of a 3rd line energy guy but Edmonton actually have depth on offense....definitely fits the rebuild though.

I've always believed Petrell was signed with the intention of playing for OKC. IMO, if they do re-sign him, they'll give the young guys coming up every opportunity to once again beat Petrell out for a job.

I believe it will come down to the numbers game--as it always does

top 3
Hall--Nuge--Eberle
second 3
Yakopov--Gagner--Hemsky
third 3
MPS--Horcoff--Smyth
fourth 3
Jones--Belenger--Eager
extras
Hordichuck--Lander--Petrell

rookies Nipping at a shot
Chris VandeVelde
Teemu Hartikainen
Tyler Pitlick
Curtis Hamilton
Ryan Martindale
Philippe Cornet
Antti Tyrvainen

Antti T is one guy I am keeping an eye on--he is like Lennart but tougher and gets into nasty situations

yes I know I left omark off the list because when the team dresses 7 d and makes you a healthy scratch that is not a good sign

It will be the numbers game and the oilers have decisions to make

4th liners who can also carry PK minutes effectively aren't too common, so I would like him back. I see him starting in OKC (Depending on off-season moves), and being a call-up when those inevitable Oilers injuries happen.

I like Petrell. Most hits among forwards despite only playing 60 games and he is a good PKer. I don't know if he has the speed to play 5 on 5 though. He's sound positionally so he is an effective PKer, but 5v5 up and down the ice he doesn't have the foot speed. He along with Lander and Eager faced the softest competition 5v5 on the team and Lander at Petrell did not do very good with it. Lander was only 20 so you can give him a bit of a pass, but Petrell at 27 can't afford to be a liability against other teams 4th lines.

Other thing about Petrell is he has a wife and a kid. I can see him not signing another NHL contract unless he is assured a 1 way deal. If he is only getting 2-way offers I wouldn't be surprised to see him go back to Europe.

bubble NHL'er. We may not have room for him but if he takes a 2-way deal it works for me. Depth player...

I'd bring him back. He's plays well defensively, hits and from what I understand is a good guy in the locker room.

Also, he's not a kid (28)...he's pretty much a finished product at this point. You know what you're going to get from him and you don't need to worry about his development too much. So basically, you can sit him in the press box and have him fill in when needed (if we're actually "that deep" when the season starts). You don't want Lander, Hartikainen or any of the upcoming kids sitting in the press box for a significant amount of time. You want them either in the Oilers lineup or in the minors working on their game. No one benefits from the kids sitting around eating popcorn half the season. If you can find a better press box/filler guy, then by all means...go for it. To me, Petrell fits the bill just fine.

Ideal bottom 6er. Strong, physical, great PKer and has a cannon despite not being the best offensively. I'd waive Eager before letting him go

No problem at all with Petrell... knows his role and plays it well and I sense he's just grateful to have a job at the NHL level. I hope they still have a 4th line spot for him... or at minimum a 13th forward/utility spot.
