Ideal bottom 6er. Strong, physical, great PKer and has a cannon despite not being the best offensively. I'd waive Eager before letting him go
He also didn't take a lot in the way of stupid penalties, and was way more physical than Invisible Ben, not as fast mind you but didn't seem to be bothered by his role. (never heard him complain about ice time)
Ideal??? Guy has near zero offense! I want a player who can play a little on both sides of the puck in my bottom 6.
And what cannon?? Weber has a cannon, Souray has a cannon. Petrell does not have a cannon.
Player A
GP63 8G 5A 13PTS -1
Player B
GP60 4G 5A 9PTS -10
Which player would you rather have on your 4th line?
Probably "Player A" if we're ignoring his half as many hits, a bunch more bonehead penalties, very little added toughness and complete lack of PK time.
sign him to either a 1 year contract or a two way deal. I'd like to keep him since he's been effective in his role, but it's not the end of the world if he's in the ahl or something.
I think he is perfect for the role he plays. I also think he is perfect because he seems to be just on the fringe of staying in the NHL and going back to the AHL. Nice little carrot skating around the rink for the donkey's in OKC (Harty, MPS, VV, Lander etc) to try to get the spot. Depending on how the kids progress at the beginning of next year should determine if someone can step into Petrell's (and Eagers, Jones,) spots this coming season.
Agree with Spawn's assessment. I have no problem with Pettrell, but I look at teams like Bos, Phi, Pit and their 3-4 lines have a mixture of toughness and skill.

Just because he didn't score 50 goals doesn't mean it's not there. And when you throw in all the other qualities of those 2 players and their contracts, 4 points isn't a big.deal
Neither are good enough to play a proper fourth-line role on a contending team.
This is fighting over scraps.
Considering how "Player A" was a 4th line player on a Chicago team that won the Stanley Cup, and a 4th line player on a team that finished 2nd in the west the very next year, that is a pretty strange thing to say.

I don't really give a **** about what team they played on, those offense contributions aren't enough.
And throwing out stats in a guessing game is pure hockey fan masturbation. Means nothing.

I think you expect too much out of fourth liners. 8 goals is fine for a fourth liner as long as he brings toughness and energy to the game, which Eager did not really do last year. You're not going to have three guys on your fourth line scoring 10 goals.
He's a place holder. You keep him until a better option comes along. His problem is he lacks any dominant qualities, and though he hits often, doesn't hit particularly hard.
Given that there are no wingers that I know of graduating from the AHL to the 4th line, he probably gets re-signed, but at least a little bit of time should be spent looking at the other UFAs available that you could target for 4th line winger roles.
I get the feeling there are a few posters here that want to see a 4th line with the likes of Dave Bolland, Dustin Brown and Chris Neil on it. That's just not going to ****ing happen.
I can't see anybody arguing otherwise, other than we may have too many contracts.
His first year here was physical, with the option of fighting, which weren't oft to happen. In fact, in terms of protecting our kids, he seemed to be the only thing physical on some nights. If this team wants to continue being the wet noodle that it is, they wouldn't sign him.
At the very least, he makes us a spicy wet noodle.
