The Antti Niemi Appreciation Thread

Yeah, you read that right. The guy was amazing. Nemo gave the team every opportunity to win the series, if the offense could deliver, we would be praising him as the reason we won. I understand getting wanting to get an upgrade in net in the summer, but to blame him for the series or the season makes no sense.

Colin White was better than Niemi in that series...

Niemi scored as many points as Patrick Marleau at almost half the cap hit.

That's what I thought?

Anyway his fumble in Game 5 was incredibly atrocious, his soft 4th GA in game 4 ended up technically costing us. Other than that he was fine. Meh.

He is one of the most tradeable assets the Sharks have. Which is...

I felt that with all the speculation that we need to ditch him and go with Greiss/Stalock, we need a reminder that Niemi is not the problem here, having two backups would be much worse that what we have now.

I'm not a fan and haven't been for a while now. But keeping Niemi is better than rolling with a Greiss/Stalock tandem. I'm all for moving Niemi if we can acquire a better goalie, but I don't think that'll happen without overpaying. Unfortunately, we're probably stuck with Nemo for the remainder of his contract.

I appreciate what he did in the Blues series. But it's time for him to go.

Yep he was decent (awesome in game 1) and gave us a chance to win. I don't think he's going anywhere as long as our prospects aren't ready to play in the big league. They won't start the season with Greiss or whoever as a starter, and there's simply no point to trade for a goalie since we got bigger issues to worry about.

He didn't cost us a series no.. He stole one game from 5..

But in saying that, that rebound in game 5 is typical Niemi.. It's sad that he has such huge flaws with his rebound control.

Not blaming him for any losses, but I wouldn't mind starting next season without him.

The first goal he gave up in game 5 was pathetic. Season was on the line, sharks had a chance to steal a game and gain some momentum in the series. You CANNOT give up that goal, plain and simple

I'm not pinning the sub-par season all on him....but he's clearly part of the problem not part of the solution.

I'm sorry but he was a problem and he may in fact be one of the biggest problems. The system we have had to put in place to support his weaknesses drags down team speed and offense. We are always backing into the zone, backing off, starting off from a standstill. There is never an expectation of a quick transition, it's more like hoping for a disaster not to happen, then damage control, then hope the other team is tired enough to go off for a change, then break out. Niemi's lack of rebound control, poor puck play and shaky glove hand send our team chasing their own tails in our zone, and over the course of a game that tires them out while killing momentum. It's no coincidence that the game he stole he was freezing almost every puck.; the 87 faceoffs in that game were the most in the series.

We lost the series because our "star" players didn't score. Not because Nemo didn't freeze a few pucks.

Sorry, but the Sharks could have had Jacques Plante in goal and they still would have lost this series. Unless Niemi is one of Joe Thornton's wingers, he is not at fault for this loss.

Cant really complain to much about his playoff series, though the elimination game goal was umm....ya...

Im glad he stepped up but I will be ok with him stepping out as well.

Not real sure how I can explain how Niemi drags offense down, then people go on about how the offense was at fault but not Niemi.

You're absolutely right, Niemi had 0 points that entire series. I mean, at least get an assist on an empty netter or something...
