Sadly, the dream seems about dead:

Quote:
GM Ray Shero, in a series of questions from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dave Molinari, shed some light on the situation.

First, Jordan Staal has not told Shero that he wants to play elsewhere and the team expects to re-sign him. Staal, a top defensive center and blossoming offensive player, can become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The 23-year-old is in the final year of a contract that comes with a $4 million cap hit.

Later, speaking with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Josh Yohe, Shero solidified that stance: "I'm not interested in trading Jordan Staal," he said. "I want to sign him. You can't have it both ways."

Trade talk around Staal is on the verge of reaching fever pitch, mainly because the 2012 NHL Draft is in Pittsburgh on June 22, and it's easy to speculate that Staal, given his status as the third option behind Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, would want to move.

Though teams have inquired about Staal, Shero told the Post-Gazette, the Penguins haven't put him on the market.

Uh-huh. "I don't want to trade him" sounds like he is setting up excuses

"Well his agent made it clear he would be seeking this much and we didn't feel we could be competitive giving X dollars to 3 centers"

Why even give statements to the press anymore if it's just going to be met with "He's not telling the truth" or "Of course he's going to say that."

Shero says he's not available right now, and I believe him.

At that point, it would be up to Staal to commit long term to Pens or not sign. If it's not, PIT would have to explore trade options.

and now welcome back to the HFBoards version of "Jordan Staal to <Insert Your Team>" Thread

According to Strickland, Staal has told Shero he will not re-sign when his contract expires.

If indeed true, that would seem to suggest that Staal already has an alternative location/team (i.e. Carolina or NY to play with either brother) in mind for next summer.

And, if that's the case, for all the same reasons that most accepted the Sabres backing away from chasing Richards last summer because he had already chosen to go to NY, it would be a huge, huge gamble for Buffalo to trade the kind of package needed to get him for only 1 year.

Same situation as Getzlaf. No point is trading for a one year player unless an extension is part of the deal. 90% of this situation is all about what Staal wants though, and I doubt it's to play in Buffalo.

- He'd be "the man" in Buffalo... something he supposedly desires to be
- He'd be playing for an owner monetarily committed to winning a cup. He could practically write his own contract... How many teams are going to offer JStaal 60 million over 10-12 years? with 30 million up front in the first 3 years? Answer: Not many.
- He'd have the opportunity to be a small market hero, just like his brother.

if he wanted to be on a front line contender, he could just stay in Pitt...

Those are thing us fans would argue as plusses. I don't think big name pending UFAs think the same way though. Money and being on a big name franchise with a perennial chance to win. Buffalo can only offer money.

Regier needs to figure out how to pry Marc off the Rangers.

We should've drafted Kreider over Kassian like Bakes said...

He's untouchable in NY. IMO

Hmmm

stupid hypothetical...

Would you trade Myers for Marc Staal
....IF...
it "Guaranteed" you would land Jordan, either in trade or as an UFA?

Marc Staal is a damn fine defensemen. He could slide right into a #1 pairing here.

maybe a 3 way:
To NY : Myers
To Pitt : Pominville
To Buff : JStaal, MStaal

oh god... here we go... can't stop myself

To Anaheim : Ennis, Pysyk, #21
To Buffalo : Ryan

To San Jose : Vanek+Roy
To Buffalo : Thornton

ADDICTION... STOP IT

Really just conjecture at this point. Shero is saying Staal wants to stay a Penguin and other people are saying he wants to GTFO.

Would folks be open to including Ennis or Hodgson in a trade proposal for Staal? If thats what we had to do to get him.

No, and I doubt Pittsburgh would be either. They'd probably want to fix their D and give Crosby some decent wingers.

Ennis on Crosby's LW could be damned intriguing for the Pens.

Game back on according to Bob Mac...turned down a 10yr extension.

Caveat: Looks like he wants to go UFA.

If Staal won't re-up in PIT, where he loves it, not expected to extend with anyone else who may trade for him. Except perhaps Carolina.

If thats the case... idk if i want him. If hea willibg to leave Pitt, he has an idea of where he wants to be and i doubt its Buffalo.

There's no point in a non-Stanley Cup contender giving up legit assets to acquire one year of Jordan Staal. Time to cross him off the wish list.
