Panthers Season Comes to a Crashing End

The Florida Panthers 2012 season came to an abrupt halt yesterday after the team dropped game 5 against the Montreal Canadiens, and subsequently their first round series. This was a shocking result to a club many were predicting would take home the Cup after winning the Eastern Conference after a very dominant second half to the season.

"I'm not really sure what happened to be honest. They were close games that we just couldn't get the edge on. Martin Brodeur was definitely outstanding and made our life difficult," said GM Brock Otten. Otten continued with sarcasm," Now I know how the Blues feel every year! But hey, at least the other number one seed is down 3-1 in their series too! Bad year to be on top of your Conference I suppose."

The Panthers will now focus their attention to an offseason which will no doubt be incredibly busy. The team plans on entertaining offers on star forward Zach Parise and top pairing defenseman Mark Streit.

"We had to sign some pretty hefty contracts this season, so now we'll have to try to make some moves to cut down our payroll and round out our roster through trade," said Otten.

Even though the Panthers have some holes to fill for next season (like a 2nd line center or blueline depth), the team should be poised for another strong season thanks to the terrific NHL seasons of the teams core like Jonathan Quick, James Neal, Patrick Sharp, Matt Moulson, etc. That's if Otten can successfully fill the team's holes that is.

While times may be bleak now, the future still looks bright for the Panthers to continue their, at least regular season, dominance of the Eastern Conference.

Same here. I might only get one of my first round picks right.

As for the Panthers, quite a surprise. The Habs are an unusually strong #8 seed, at least for the Eastern Conference, but such a quick exit is shocking.

No surprise to me....I hold the Habs pick...given how my season has gone, they are a lock for the Cup.

I had the same final, just with the Panthers winning. Crazy first round we're having, much like the NHL.

Congrats on a good season Brock. As you point out yourself you have a lots of core talent and a good influx so this wasn't a one shot deal. You'll well positioned to challenge for years to come so the old saying "we'll get them next year" is a real possibility.
