You're 2nd to none when it comes to supporting Leaf prospects, but let's not get carried away. if you see a lot of potential in a player it still doesn't mean they are going to be as great as great players have been.
The wildest comparison is Jake Gardiner to Scott Niedermeyer. If you see something that reminds of a NHL defenseman with offensive capabilities it doesn't mean that they are going to be a NHL Hall Of Famer. Now it's one thing to appreciate a player's ability, but it's another to say that "he's the next Scott Niedermeyer".
Let me just list a few awards / accomplishments:
-All Star Jr. Career including Memorial Cup in which he was the MVP
-92-93 All Star Rookie
-94-95 Stanley Cup (NJD)
-9 Time All Star
-Gold Medal 2002 Olympics
-02-03 Stanley Cup (NJD)
-03-04 Norris Trophy Winner
-06-07 Conn Smythe Trophy
-06-07 Stanley Cup (ANA)
-2010 Gold Medal Olympics
I mean is there only 1 or 2 defensemen who might have been better in their careers? maybe 1?
^Now you actually want to compare Gardiner to that? It will be nothing short of a miracle if he even accomplishes 2 or 3 of those things.
Stay grounded people.
Lets compare our prospects with someone who's not so career-elite-class ok?
I don't even.. Sweeping generalization about Leafs fans. As if everyone thinks Jake Gardiner is going to be Nieds. It's extremely hard for any one player to separate himself enough to be a great these days but if Gardiner does it, it will be on his own merit, not because someone on an online Forum said he would be.
