I'm not sure which goalie I want this week. It's always someone new who people make out to be our savior then you hear other people and wonder what Tampa is thinking. Looking at Bernier he doesn't look like anything more than Tik but drafted in the 1st round. They are similar builds, similar stats in juniors and AHL, Bernier has better NHL numbers but Tik has proven he can win at every level. Bernier just seems like his potentially might not be much more than Tik's. I hope SY doesn't listen to too much of Murray's rants about Bernier and give up too much for him.

If it's a choice between Tic and Bernier I want Tic.
Still want Riku to come back and fight for a spot.
I think Bernier has the potential to be brilliant, and I've been hoping we trade for him all along. The stats can be deceiving - I'd encourage folks to watch some video of him on youtube (even though, admittedly, there isn't much).
The guy's as athletic as any goalie in the league, his instincts and positioning are good, and he tracks very well - something that makes a HUGE difference. I like Tik, but every game I've watched of him, it seems like half the time he has no idea where the puck is, and it just happens to hit him - which is dangerous if you don't have a top-notch (read: Norfolk) defense in front of you to close out shooting lanes.
It's lofty, but I see a few hints of vintage Brodeur in Bernier's game. Maybe it's just because I love a good pad-stack.
I think Bernier will be a top-10 goalie in the league for years to come, but that's just my two cents.
I would rather go with Garon/Tic/Riku next year, draft a goalie, and upgrade the defense, than over payment for Bernier, or any other goalie
Tic seems to be the Rodney Dangerfield of hockey. If you put him in behind the Kings defense I think he would look much better than his short stint up last year with us. Put any young goalie behind the AHL level D we had last year and they would look awful.
So IMO it the defense that is the main thing we need to upgrade. If we could land Suter (I can dream) and get a 3/4 to replace Ohlund it would mean the goalie was not left out to dry 10 times a game.

I agree with most of this. I thought I read though that Riku wasn't gonna be coming over this year. I wouldn't mind going with a Garon/Tik and hope Garon can play like he did before injury and Tik can play 30 games. If we did go with that tandem and how much of a winner Tik is I can see him carrying us on a postseason run if we make it. I think everyone would love Suter but we most likely aren't getting him, I'm not enamored with the other UFA's either so not sure what SY has in mind for our D.
I think they look very similar on paper, I haven't seen enough Bernier to know his playing style. Who would you prefer to have?
Bernier. I love Tic, but Bernier is his superior athletically, mental makeup is a wash, and playing styles are opposites. Bernier is a super athletic goaltender where as Tic stays in his crease and tries hard to play his angles.

I get your points, but honestly you can make any goalie who's played more than 20-25 game look good in youtube highlights. I'd stay clear from Bernier.

Based on his prior history, it's probably not a good idea to go into the season telling Garon he's the #1 guy. I do agree the defense needs to be upgraded though no matter what happens in net.
I'd rather have Bernier than Tik. But that ignores the fact that it would cost assets to acquire Bernier, and leave Tik/Janus in limbo after their superb Calder playoffs performance.
I would have to say trade for Bernier with Garon as a 1b-backup. We draft a goalie that still has some eligibility in the minors for the future in the 2nd round. Helenius still has one year left on his contract, so when Garon's contract is up, we bring up either Tokarski or Helenius as Bernier's backup. Janus, I'm not sure what they'll do with his contract status for next year - hopefully sign him for another year or two.
This of course all depends on whether Bernier is what we hope he'll be.....besides, he's french - he'll fit right in with the rest of the team.
I know we're all proud of our boys right now but Tokarski has a ways to go before hes ready for consistent time in the NHL. He still has trouble with his location between posts, his puck handling could still use work too.

I agree that Tik isn't 100% ready for a 1b roll yet, but what's left for him to accomplish in the AHL? Every young goalie has issues and flaws they need to work on, he'll work on those in practice against NHL shooters so he's ready for games. Being in the AHL would give him more playing time but he needs to face better competition, also him being in AHL stalls Janus' development a little. We need to see if he will sink or swim.

A classic catch 22. I also don't feel he is 100% NHL ready, but just as you said he is just a little too good for the A. He is in limbo. If he we had a Rinne/Quick/Lundqvist type #1, I would be fine with him being back up. Considering the situation we are in right now, moving him is probably not the right move.
On Josh Harding It sounds more and more like Harding may finally get his starting shot in Tampa. Boston is also an option, but more as a backup for Rask. also heard Montreal
Just to throw his name out there, and not I endorse the idea, but what about Martin Biron?
Or does he just go into too long of slumps and has cemented his status as a backup? He'll be 35 before the start of next season, but there were seasons where he was Buffalo's #1.

He's a backup. The thought of him and Garon doing a 1A/1B thing is not exactly comforting.
