I'm already split on considering the captaincy-experiment a failure. When he got the C, it was obvious they hoped it would get him to want to grow into the role and the responsibilities that came along with it, but as of now, there isn't anything visible of all that. In the end, what's happening in the room is about as important as what happens on the ice, but I have a hard time seeing Getz as the character.
The real problem is that we don't know what taking the C away will do. I don't think he'll ask for someone else to take it. And I don't think we'll want to take a chance on angering him in any way as long as he's not signed beyond next summer.
I think Getzy has two (mental) problems to deal with, that showed up this season.
1) Personal life. Being a dad and a husband must take some focus away from hockey, but I think he'll find his balance again next season.
2) Motivation when he's won already "everything". Most players say they're motivated to win the Cup. For example Koivu said in an interview a couple of days ago that so far his greatest regret is that he hasn't won it yet and it's his main motivation to play. This I think won't be that easy for Getzy to overcome. He has to find some new motivation. If not winning it for himself, then win it for the team?
Wow, I feel terrible for Getzlaf. Captaining Canada to a Gold medal would have given him a nice boost going into next year season after a disastrous year. Instead, he is the reason Canada loses. Brutal.
Well, that sucked. Scott Gordon is a moron that hopefully won't ever sit behind our team's bench ever again. On the bright side, the American Ducks did well, and none of them were responsible for the loss.
Getzlaf costs Canada the game. Meh, it means more rest for him and Perry at least. They've already won the gold medal that counts.
Tries to put the shoulder into him, guy jumps inside, Getzlaf's foot is planted and they connect. Not a lot Getzlaf could have done differently, aside from making the decision far sooner not to hit the player. An "in the moment" call for the officials without the benefit of replay, so I don't really blame them that much, but it was the wrong call and a really really bad break for Getzlaf who I thought was having a very strong tournament.

Offline, I haven't spoken to one person who follows the sport who agrees with the call, which includes more Americans than Canadians. It is a questionable call that directly led to the elimination of the Canadians...do you really expect them not to "homer it up"?
