besides Quenneville's ineptitude of course.

I agree with this thread, but what can we do. This was the past these players have moved on and have taken these roles with their current clubs. We shouldn't have let them go. Sometimes the cap will kill you and that had to happen to us.

Other teams with less talent seem to have no relatively problems on the PP and they don't even seem to have much net presence either.

From what I've seen in the playoffs so far the teams with a successful PP like Philly have excellent player positioning and puck movement. They also free guys up to get decent shots on goal instead of the shin-seeking missiles that our guys fire off.

So based on that either our players are morons or the coaching staff is doing a poor job setting up a PP that actually yields quality chances.

Yup Thomas freaking Kopecky is the reason our PP is terrible...

Edit: just saw Panzerspite made the thread so I shouldn't be surprised

Hawks have other big bodies they could have molded in to this role. Stalberg, Bickell.

It should have been a priority. Not saying they would have been as good but that's not the point. Toews is the only one setting up in front of the net.

I agree with Panzer's premiss. Having somebody that can set up in front of the net means nothing if you can't gain the zone, nor win the initial face off on the PP.

Net presence matters, there's no denying that. We also don't have many defensemen that can move the puck in the offensive zone. It may help if we didn't put Bruno out there for playoff PP minutes...

Hayes seems like the perfect fit for that role. He seems like his ceiling could be a more skilled version of Buff. But he's too busy sitting in the press box for no reason so yeah.

In your face,

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports...,3405776.story

"With 3:54 left, Fleischmann had a look at an open net but pushed his shot wide when he was interfered with. That led to one more power-play opportunity for the Panthers.

That's all they would need as 16 seconds later Marcel Goc knocked in a wide rebound of a Fleischmann shot with Tomas Kopecky draped over Brodeur for a 2-2 tie. It was Goc's second goal and fifth point of the series to set up the series' second straight overtime game."

Sure, but what's the good of having good positioning in front of the net when your guys couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat? Our d man are terrible at getting shots on net let alone getting them through.

How many of our powerplays resulted in no shots on goal this year? Is that a result of not having someone in front? I don't think so.

The ****** puck movement and overreacting with the puck when its on their sticks is why the powerplay sucks. They either wait too long to make a pretty play or fire it into the defenders.

I'm not convinced Hayes wants that role. His interest in physical play seems to come and go.

Yeah, we just don't have the right guys to play that role. It's easy to say, Bickell, Hayes, Stalberg but it just isn't really their game. Hayes is the only one of the 3 I could see working out well there but we clearly need a big bodied player that relishes going to the net because we have more than enough forwards that can find him with a good pass or low shot intended for rebound.

Then bring on Beach or Kevin Hayes.

Shaw was very effective providing screening on the 1st-unit PP during the surge near the end of the regular season. Then Quenneville "loaded up" his 1st-unit PP after Toews returns, Shaw inexplicably got demoted to the second unit with the plugs.

I don't think either of them are that type of player either. Kyle Beach has been known to play lazy...and that's the last kind of role a lazy player would want.

They need to find someone with the drive of Andrew Shaw, but the body of Beach, Hayes or Bickell.

As for Shaw - I agree that he is the best option until something else comes up.

Oh, BTW, what I'm really saying is: The "core" have not enough balls to stand in front of the net, other than Toews.

Sharp and Kane, they are just not built that way.

Disappointing that Q can't figure that out. Maybe Jayes is too raw to take that role yet, but despite all the futility on the PP, Q didn't even try it.

It's dumfounding for me.

He was tried there. Then he got 4th-line mins, and soon the press box.
