Bruins like college players

Bill Ladd has written an informative article in HF about the Bruins preference for college players over Europeans in the prospect ranks. Junior hockey players are not included in the article. In addition to Maxim Chudinov (D), other European prospects include Lars Volden (G) and Alexander Khokhlachev (C).

The Bruins drafting philosophy becomes pretty apparent when you compare their NCAA group to their European one: they boast nine skaters in the college ranks, to just one overseas. Obviously, the Bruins prefer to keep their talent close to home. The college group is led by Michigan State captain and recent free agent signing Torey Krug and former BC Eagles' captain Tommy Cross. The lone European representative, Maxim Chudinov was one of the best defenseman in KHL this year.

The college prospects and their current status include:

Torey Krug (D)
Brian Ferlin (RW)
Tommy Cross (D)
Justin Florek (LW)
Zach Trotman (D)
Ben Sexton (C/W)
Alexander Fallstrom (RW/LW)
Nick Tremblay (C)
Mark Goggin (C)

Ferlin was impressive this season. I won't claim to know what a future NHLer looks like at the college level, but he was one of Cornell's best forwards. He plays a good power forward game- very strong on the puck. His injury really hurt the team.

It's a solid drafting strategy imo. With the KHL now offering a fiscally comparable option closer to home more and more players from overseas may be harder to lure over. That's simply not a worry with North American players. Plus with the drastic improvements in the US programs it stands to reason they are and will continue to be churning out far more high end youngsters.

This is a new trend.....they really haven't drafted a whole lot of college players in the past. I think I went back about 10 yrs recently and they picked maybe a half-dozen throughout.

I imagine they assumed the high scholla nd American Jr players were headin gto college when they drarafted them.

The college prospects and their current status include:

Torey Krug (D) - Free Agent - undrafted
Brian Ferlin (RW) - Indiana / USHL
Tommy Cross (D) - Westminster (High-CT)
Justin Florek (LW) - Northern Michigan / CCHA
Zach Trotman (D) - Lake Superior / CCHA
Ben Sexton (C/W) - Nepean (CJHL)
Alexander Fallstrom (RW/LW) - Minnesota Wild draft pick, acquired in trade
Nick Tremblay (C) - Smiths Falls (CJHL)
Mark Goggin (C) - Choate-Rosemary (High-CT)

Not mentioned:
Zane Gothberg - North Dakota / drafted out of Thief River Falls (High-MN)
Rob O'Gara - Milton Academy HS

Before Chia:
Phil Kessel - 2006 - Minnesota
Jonathan Siglet - 2005 - Bowling Green
Ben Walter - 2004 - UMass
Matt Hunwick - 2004 - Michigan
Mark Stuart - 2003 - Colorado College
Kevin Regan - 2003 - St. Sebastian's HS
Yan Stastny - 2002 - Notre Dame
