If we make it to the conference finals definitely get rid of it. If we're done this round, that's a toss up, we'd be ~18th, that can still be a decent pick.
This year we're in the second round of the playoffs.
Minimax (or maximin?), give up this year's in case we're a lottery team next year. Talent at 18 isn't awesome anyway, we're set at forward, and our D/Goalie prospects look nice. Holler Merrill, Gelinas, Larssdawg, etc.

Unless the Devils could trade this year's first rounder as part of a deal to bring a quality player to the team this offseason, forfeit this one. There's no guarantee the Devils will make the playoffs next year, let alone win a round again, so it's best to forfeit the pick when it'll get you the least.
I say forfeit the pick and get it over with. The Devils are in the second round now, I think this team is only going to get better next year too
Wouldn't that mean we should keep this pick then?

As for the draft I see the talent dropoff around the 23rd spot.
Depends. I still think it`s better to stack up the talent and wait till 2014 no matter what happens between now and then.
Yep. I always say that you'd rather pay your tax as late as possible barring something happening. That should stand here too.

Yep which is why I'm confused why people would be interested in dumping the #18 pick potentially.
Pretty obvious which side of the fence I'm on. Dumping the pick to say we should get it over with is negligent. We'll lose the pick eventually so you should make sure it has the least amount of impact whether you want to forget about it or not. I'm hoping this team continues to progress even with cash issues and the pick position should reflect that.
Things that change my opinion:
1) We win this round against Philthy
2)Not that we'd ever know, but if Conte & Co. really love a prospect coming up in a few years and don't find anyone around their pick to be worth a selection.
It's a good crop of D, but the forward depth (notably the North American born guys) is lacking. We'll have a better idea after this round is over. If we're picking ~#20, I would feel inclined to keep it.

The inverse was said about 2003.
Good crop of forwards, lack of D talent.
Suter, Phaneuf, Burns, and Seabrook ended up being taken in the 1st round.
Weber in the 2nd. Enstrom and Byfuglien in the now defunct 8th round.

Except for the fact that Zach might leave, our goaltender situation is in flux and we're in a brutal division...and by then we won't have a choice.
If we don't make the playoffs next year, the pick would absolutely be lower. If we do make the playoffs, it'd take winning two rounds to ensure it'd be much higher anyway. Giving up 18 or 19 (the way it looks like it would be heading) doesn't seem so bad when next year could easily be a top ten, unfortunately - and not very likely to be much higher than what it is now. Imagine how nuts we'd be if we 'had' to give up the pick last year and miss out on Larsson?
Of course winning one more round ends the discussion...but a lot of work to do on that.
