I'd expect Dumba would take the "dominate AHL for a full season, get called up during the next" route.

He's not AHL eligible until 2014-2015.

He'll be in the CHL next year. Nothing wrong with that.

so to my understanding we would have 2 sick lines of defense if it went something like this:

rielly/dumba and brodin
scandella and spurgeon

If you draft a player out of the CHL, they can't play in the AHL until they are 20 or have completed 4 CHL seasons. The key is drafting them out of the CHL which is why someone like Charlie Coyle could have played in the AHL this season or John Carlson (drafted out of the USHL and spent a season in the OHL) played in the AHL as a 19 year-old.

We are poised to get either Rielly or Dumba and both are really good skaters too so that would make a damned fast pairing too.

Gilbert's not a bottom pairing D.
Gilbert and Scandy were playing 23-30+ minutes together the last week or two of the season.

A better defenseman would take his minutes and Spurgeon would be solid, just for fewer minutes and more limited situations.

I forgot about the 4 seasons qualifier. Do you know if it has to be a minimum number of games? Dumba played 6 WHL games in 09-10 so he might be 13-14 AHL eligible based on 4 seasons played.

none of our defensive pairings were anything approaching awesome last season. no one is counting on any of them to stick together.

If Scandella doesn't show improvement this year he may very well find himself in the AHL for a very long time.

he had the same problem everyone else had: consistency. He still has higher upside than everyone else...and quite frankly I don't think he's going to learn anything more at the AHL level. Ideally we'll pick someone up this offseason and get a little more stability on the back end so Scandella can settle in and play sheltered minutes rather than enter every game thinking he has to be a difference maker. I got the impression from Yeo comments that Scandella was too tightly wound this season. I think he'd do fine with a year playing steady bottom pair minutes and sliding in on the PK or PP every once in a while.

I don't know if there's a minimum number of games but that's a good question.

He needs to take a page from "Why should I be nervous?" Brodin.

Wow I really disagree, He was clearly our most skilled defensman night in and out. For a rookie defenseman to come in and look so skilled with the puck is outstanding for this team IMO. If people thought Scandella had a bad year they are going to hate Brodin, guy had great stickwork against some of the top players in the world, when he made mistakes he was fantastic at adjusting to them. He changed his game up a ton throughout the season so I guess when you guys say he was inconsistent that is what you are referring to but from a defensive perspective he did everything I would expect out of a rookie defenseman with top 3 potential. I'm super excited to see his development along side Brodin, I can't imagine being put into the position Scandella was his first season and playing at the level he did, his peers were literally Zanon, Zidlicky and Schultz throughout the year. But then again I disagree with nearly everything Jarick says so maybe I get some different feeds of the games then you guys

I'm in the middle.

While I am in love with Scandella, think he has tons of upside with the Wild, and played great for a rookie defenseman ... many times he did look like a rookie defenseman.

I think that'll go away after more experience but thought he just had a few consistency issues he needs to work on

The praise just keeps coming for Brodin. A couple of the swedish NHL'ers talked about him once again today in an article in the biggest newspaper of Sweden.

http://www.aftonbladet.se/sportblade...cle14811516.ab

Victor Hedman are basically saying that he is the best 18 year old he has ever seen and Alfie says that with the right coaches there are no limits for how good Brodin can be. Kronwall compares him to Lidstrom and says that in only a couple of years Brodin will be one of the best defenceman in the world.

Sweden's Future at defense is bright

Erik Karlsson
Oliver Ekman Larsson
Jonas Brodin
etc

Add Adam Larsson, Tim Erixon, Victor Hedman and Oscar Kelfbom to that and you know that we have a lot of top notch defenders in the making.

Maybe you can add Larsson to that group but Hedman, Klefbom, Erixon won't be up there with the other 4 IMO.
