If he does come over, it'll be when he's UFA and can get a big pay day. Don't know why he'd leave the KHL for an entry level contract on the other side of the world anyway.

That really sucks for Caps fans, if having one of the games biggest Russian stars on the Caps as a mentor isn't enough to get him over I don't know what would?

this is why you cannot bank on selecting Russians high in the draft

Well it's not officially announced yet, but this time seems like he's telling the truth...really sucks. I thought it looked like he would come over.

i'm not sure I'd even want to come over, that 12:00 minutes of ice time just doesn't seem appealing.

Tough sledding for Caps fans if he signs that contract with Traktor.

I can't blame him (as an offensively oriented player), especially after seeing all these Dale Hunter coached games.

While Hunter is coach, I don't see the Caps drawing the interest of many offensive talents.

That may be true, but they just defeated the defending Stanley Cup champions and now have home ice advantage on the Rangers.

As long as Washington can retain his rights(ala Radulov) it wont be that bad.

I don't see the problem here honestly. I have no doubt he will go to the NHL after his contract is over.

Being completely honest what are his chances of A) making the team, and B) playing significant minutes?

He's still only 19. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to have him come over at the end of his current contract (he'd be 21/22) and play then. This only benefits the Capitals. He'll be a bit older, more mature, stronger and hopefully in a better position to contribute to the caps. And he'd still only be 21/22.

Still wouldn't be convinced one way or the other. Malkin was pressured into signing an extension and we know how that turned out. We'll know next year when training camp starts and he is or isn't in North America.

21/22 and looking at ELC vs big money in the KHL?

Not true. Caps hold his rights indefinitely because of the lack of a transfer agreement between the KHL and NHL.

Having a CBA in place that guaranteed that NHL players would get a shot in the Olympics in Sochi and not having Russian influences insinuating that staying in Russia improves his odds of making that Olympic team.

This thread is more for the KHL thread the way it's going - but definitely plays a part with how Washington goes about this. Let's keep it on topic w/ how it affects possible trade/fa pick ups.

ELC with bonus (teams can set these low so players hit them) can still be a couple million. Sure it's not the big money of the KHL, but the Caps have one of the best Russian wingers in Ovie to mentor him (although who knows how long he'll be there with Hunter only playing him 13/14 mins a night). If he does well, he can easily make 3-5m on his next contract.

At some point how much money does one need? I have no clue about the salary structure in the KHL, however the average NHL salary is around 2 million. If this guy projects like most think he will and produces, he should be up closer to 4+ on his second contract...

He can still make great money and would get to play in the best league in the world. I don't see him staying away forever.

I thought you could only have 2 years before you had to sign a player from Europe or CHL?
