New iPad and MBP event -- 10/22

New iPad 5 and iPad Mini expected to be announced. Haswell MBPs, too! Possibly the new Mac Pro, as well.

Mac Pro looks awesome. Everyone thought it was going to be completely unaccessible, but it looks like a lot is user accessible.

Mac Pro starts at $2999 which is actually a pretty solid price for all it has included.

And thats it. The name of the iPad Air is interesting. Gotta think an iPad Pro is coming eventually.

Those prices are hilariously awful. $300 for the original Mini (still more expensive than the superior 32GB Nexus 7). $400 for a new Mini or iPad 2, which is the same price as a PS4. And $500 for the new iPad Air (stupid name) is still at 16GB. And both of the new iPads, while coming with the iPhone 5S SOC, it doesn't even have the finger print scanner. Plus the fact that you can make a new Mac Pro specs with about half or 2/3 of that price point, but not necessarily at that size.

iPad air...da ****!?

Original iPad mini should be priced lower... $30 is nothing. I still need to decide between one of these iPads for a Christmas gift for my mom though, so it'll probably be the first edition.

I like the MBP.

If you don't own an iPad of any kind, I can always recommend the new Nexus 7. 32GB, cheaper than all of them and probably the best all around tablet on the market.

As long as it's got an app where she can read books and play games, Facebook, etc. I think she'll be fine with that.

The thing is, Apple can get away with charging a premium, Google/Android can't. Everyone else will gleefully race to the bottom, while Apple makes a tidy profit. While the Nexus 7 is 1080p, the Mini w/retina is 1536. Is it worth twice the price for the base model? Depends.

Also, it's iOS vs Android. It's no different than people buying MBA's over basically as capable Windows laptops for less. Some people think OSX is superior, and Windows is junk. I type that on Dell that I got for $380, which I like a lot, but if money were no object, I would rather have an MBA.

My biggest gripe is that the first iPad mini is now $300 for 16gb. I don't mind the iPad mini with retina display price because it literally jumped two generations in terms of hardware specs and is comparable to the iPhone 5S from what I read, but that first gen price...eh.

The new Nexus 7 is 1920x1200 on a 7 inch screen. The Mini w/retina is 2048x1536 on a 7.9 inch screen. Or going by ppi, 323 vs 326. So no, the screen itself is not worth twice the price.

I'll take the aluminum over plastic any day of the week (a fact that I've consistently made known on this board). I would gladly pay the premium for the build quality.

You can make any computer with any specs for less than what an OEM sells it for. Why is that even a point? Not everyone wants to build a computer. And, frankly, a lot of people want the form factor, size, and quietness that the Pro will offer. If you don't want it, feel free to make your own. That's a small minority of people, though.

I get that people balk at the initial Apple iPad pricing, but guess what? The re-sale value on them is hilariously better than on anything else. I sold my iPad 4 for just a few bucks less than I paid for it.

I'm one that doesn't sell tech often, unless it was older computer parts to help me get newer ones. But since I have a full time job, I don't need to do that.

I don't need to do it either. But I do in order to buy new, upgraded things. And I'd rather have something that doesn't depreciate nearly enough. You end up spending roughly the same in order to upgrade with a higher initial fee.
