Dougie Hamilton Named OHLís Defenseman Of Year

Dougie has done it--most outstanding defenseman in the OHL. He was third in voting last year.

Congratulations and welcome to the Bruins for 2012-13.

Bostonís 2011 first round pick Dougie Hamilton has won the Ontario Hockey Leagueís Max Kaminsky Trophy for the most outstanding defenseman.

The 18-year-old Hamilton led all defensemen in scoring with 17 goals and 55 assists in 50 games for the OHLís Niagra IceDogs.

ďThis year has been a ton of fun and it is a huge honor to win this award,Ē Hamilton said in a release. ďI spent the last couple of years watching the best defencemen in the league and then trying to get myself to that point and it is exciting to be here now and receive this award. A lot of past winners have gone on to NHL careers and hopefully I can follow suit.Ē

I am keeping my emotions in check. I don't want to have unfair expectations for him when he gets here.

But this is ****ing awesome. Congrats, Dougie!

He keeps progressing like this, Kate Upton might be doing the 'actual' Dougie.

Congrats to Dougie. Hopefully, that steady progress continues throughout his career and he just keeps getting better as a Bruin.

This will make it tough for you (from Joe Haggerty at csnne):

Some notable winners of the award are Al MacInnis, Chris Pronger, Brian Campbell, James Wisniewski, Marc Staal, Drew Doughty, and Ryan Ellis.

I am going to predict that he will win the Calder Trophy next season. The fact that Claude will have to use him because of his puck moving abilities will get him more playing time.

20 GM's vote on the award...can't vote for your own player. A player gets 5 points for a 1st place vote, 3 for second, 1 for 3rd. Dougie had 80 of a possible 95 points.

16 of 19 GM's voted him 1st.

Surprisingly, 3 GM's couldn't give him a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place vote.

The award makes Dougie the OHL's nominee for CHL's Outstanding Defenseman of the Year.

Do you think he will get the CHL award?

Certain all of you know, but is DH solid in his own end? And I realize he's just 18, but what's his "character profile"?

Any insight appreciated.

Kirk had this to say in his recent Bruins prospects round-up:

NEHJ Boston Bruins End of Season top-15

1. Dougie Hamilton, D Niagara Ice Dogs (OHL) 6-4, 193

2011-12 stats: GP 50 G: 17 A: 55 PTS: 72 PIM: 37

Bostonís top dog on D shattered his own previous club mark of points by a rearguard and still missed 17 games between the two-week hiatus at the World Jr. Championship and 10-game suspension. A fine skater for his size who is a power play weapon, Hamilton is still learning to play effective defense. Not overly physical, he will not ever be a nasty shutdown kind of player, but has learned to use his body and leverage to rub opponents out along the boards. With four goals and 19 points in 15 playoff games, Hamiltonís 91 points in both regular and postseason prove that he is a two-way force.

Hamilton won the award even after missing 17 games due to a 10 game suspension and playing in the World Junior Championship.

He had 17 goals and 55 assists for 72 points in just 50 games.

Don't want to take away from this award Alan, but honestly though, he has a good chance but I want to wait and see who comes out of the WHL and QMJHL first.

Doubt that Murray gets it in the Dub because of his injury limiting him to 40+ games. And really like Gauthier-Leduc from the Q.

Knowing Chia and Claude's modus operandi with young players breaking in (specifically Seguin of course), it wouldn't surprise me if they spoon feed the kid next year, especially being a defenseman. Probably a lot like Adam Larsson this year (just seeing his first action in Round 2). Probably sit him more than once with Dougie Jarvis to see the game slow down from up top. I'll be very excited to see where he is in 3 to 5 years.

That being said, say hello to the No.1 power play unit Dougie

And Haggerty will be the first one to rip him when the kid stumbles, as he most certainly will.

Meanwhile, congrats to Dougie. Can't wait for development camp (it's usually in late June/early July, for those asking).

Congrats Dougie!

Dev Camp was the 2nd week of July last year and they usually have weekend sessions. Can't wait!
