Rick Dudley named assistant GM in Montreal

Darren Dreger‏@DarrenDreger

Leafs haven't been asked by Habs to speak to Rick Dudley. But, expect Dudley and Marty Lapointe to be among Bergevin's early hires

Would be a shame to lose Dudley.

What was Dudley's role in Toronto anyway?

I think he's currently Director of Player Personnel. But yeah, I'd rather keep him than Loiselle.

Leafs have too many GMs on staff, so it really is possible they'd a guy like Dudley move on. For Dudley it would be a sideways move in title, but likely he'd become the clear #2 hockey voice to Bergevin, instead of being part of an almost astoundingly large group Burke's assembled, with Nonis looking like the first among equals under Burke.

I have enormous respect for Dudley, but I also can't help notice that the Leafs pro scouting has been spotty at best and I have to wonder what his opinion was on the moves. On the one hand Burke has made some very solid trades, Gardiner for Beauchemin was a home run in my books, but the UFA signings have been pretty much uniformly disastrous. This area is a key weakness for both teams, and you have to think Dudley's supposed to help solve it, the question is was he part of the problem in Toronto or would he part of the solution in Montreal. Or both. Or neither. Basically I think he's a major asset to any team, but again the Leafs have so many senior hockey people in place, it's not surprising some would move on.

I find it hilarious that the Montreal Canadiens, the most storied franchise in NHL history, hire based on language first, skill-set second. I thought the purpose was to win, not appease a group of irrational purists. I'm sure their new bilingual GM will do wonders, though.

It's part of their culture, you can't blame them for that. Especially the amount of french interviews they have to give, dealings with businesses perhaps, community stuff. French is probably needed to feel comfortable in that environment.

Lol who was the poster here that said that there is nothing wrong with the people under Burke and that everyone is on the same page. Dudley has obviously taken interest in the position and wants to be off this sinking ship.

Give up Poulin or Loiselle, not Duds.

We do have too many cooks in the kitchen though.

this is pure speculation, what on earth are you talking about?

Where does it say that he is going anywhere or wants to go anywhere? He's from toronto also you know that?

By all accounts sounds like the Bergevin hire is a really good one.

Make them give us a pick. I'm sick of losing executive talent for nothing.

I love this board . You guys haven't a clue what Loiselle or Dudley do in their every day job BUT you want to keep Dudley and give Loiselle.

On second thoughts...Dudley is a cooler name.

Give them Loiselle!!!

I would think that Dudley would be involved in our draft scouting and if he were to move to the Habs, it should be after the draft.

I think Burke would absolutely give permission to let him go, if in fact it's a move up the ladder but he has stated in the past, that sideways moves, would not be something he would let happen.

I'd personally prefer Dudley as Leafs GM.

Dudley should consider all his options closely as you never know when the next GM position will open up.

Meh.

I really don't see how some can be upset about this. Do you even know what kind of influence or input Dudley has?

I know he has a solid track record but it's not like we are losing someone that's in charge of the team.

I'm sure Burke can find someone easily as qualified as Dudley in the role he's in.

Dont know about you, but dudley has more experience and more reputation that Loiselle. He was a pro scout in the ducks organization, while Dudley was a key figure in the hawks, and the bolts organization and has always been a excellent talent evaluator. Picking players like Kane, Burmistrov and Bogo?

If you're implying that Burke could get fired next season, the next GM would probably be Nonis if the Leafs were to choose from the current management and not start from scratch.
