Correct. His contract is performance based. Low risk, high reward.

Good job Feaster!

I guess that means Roman Horak is out. You can't have two Roman C's on the same team.

Calgary bars can now start planning their "Cerveza for Cervenka" promotions.

Since it's an ELC, it has to be 2-way, correct?

Cervenka's signing..likely means a final so-long to Olli Jokinen. #cantsignboth

Yes, but it likely has a European out-clause.

Why?
I'm not sure he sticks at center in the NHL.

I don't see why this one move alone would indicate that. The off-season hasn't even started. He's a 26 year old center with a lot of promise, seems like a good fit for a team that has a lack of center depth and high-end potential in the 22-26 year range.

I think you can pretty much expect Sven to be on the team next year, and guys like Bouma, Nemisz, and Aliu will definitely be given looks to replace spare parts like Moss and Kostopoulos. I don't think the "trade everyone and tank" method was ever really an option.

Pretty crazy that he's getting the same type of contract as a 1st overall draft pick.

Is it really a desperation move? Explain to me how that is? It looks to me like they are trying to replace Olli with a good player.

Kind of surprised they chose Cervenka over Jokinen.

Granted, he's a few years younger, but Jokinen was a 60 point centerman that liked Calgary and probably would have re-signed at a discount.

Yea but he is 26 and has been playing against men for longer than a 1st overall pick, and he is good to go this year. I don't understand the commotion about the cap hit, it's not bad at all.

Seems like this came out of nowhere.

Usually, we have endless speculations/rumors when a star player decides to leave Europe.

Anyway, even if the cap hit is high, it's still a low risk move. If the Flames sends him to the AHL, I'm pretty sure that he bolts to the KHL and the 4M cap hit is gone.

And it's only a one-year deal. Obviously there was a bidding war for this guy which will drive up the price.

And it's not like the Flames are going to be front runners in the Suter/Parise sweepstakes anyway. They have cap space to burn and no major players to re-sign. This is exactly the kind of thing they should be doing with that money.

If you watched Calgary post trade deadline, it would be a surprise. Jokinen was a ghost down the stretch. I'm glad they appear to be moving on from him.

As for this signing, meh why not? Next year will probably be a write off for us anyway, so why not try a guy out who's had some success other places. 1 year is low risk.

1 year ELC. 2 way. $925,000 is the max salary. $70,000 AHL salary. The rest is all performance bonus money.

Yeah, the cap hit is mostly made up of performance bonuses, so it won't even matter since the bonus cushion will be back.

As an Oiler fan, I have nothing negative to say about this signing, aside from my curiousity about his size. If the Flames were going to overpay, make it an overpay on a potential breakout player for only one year. Not bad in that respect. I do question if he is big enough though. Time will tell there. Not a bad move Feaster.

There is no reason why the Flames can't sign Olli as well - a little confused as to why people are making this out to be Olli's end of days in Calgary.

List of guys whose Cap hit is around his potential 3.775 mil cap hit.

Ville Leino
Brooks Laich
Dustin Penner
David Booth
Nik Antropov
Brad Boyes
Jason Blake
Wojtek Wolski
Chris Kunitz
Jarret Stoll

All except Stoll and Kunitz had a higher Cap hit than Cervenka will next season.

I guess they could, but I hope they don't. Jokinen will be commanding a big pay-day (maybe taking a bit of a discount to stay here for family reaosons), and between Iginla, Cammalleri, Tanguay, Glencross, Baertschi, and now Cervenka, will there be room for Jokinen in the top 6? Even Stajan looked decent once he was moved up from the 4th line.

Besides, isn't the HF collective continually slamming the Flames for being too old and stuck in their ways? Feaster promised change and more commitment to youth and this might be step 1 of the process.

And everyone excpet Booth and Kunitz would be labeled as way overpaid on these boards. It really isn't a bad cap hit at all for a 2nd line center. There's no sense it calling it good or bad until he plays the contract out, but a shade under $4 million for a 2nd line center? That's good value.

I see some people warming up to the idea, but I don't like it.

I wonder what other teams were offering.

EDIT: Oh, performance bonuses? I wonder what those include.
