Laviolette's Contract Status?

I know this really isn't the time to talk about this, but if I recall correctly that his contract was for two years.

Is anyone surprised that he hasn't been extended yet? I'm sure they'll extend him in the summer but I'm shocked he hasn't been signed yet.

They're holding out with the hopes that Shelley is available.

I don't see anybody else who can do a better job.

They should keep him.

There's not much to gain from announcing a contract during the playoffs and if Laviolette had a say in the matter he'd likely opt to wait so not to draw attention to himself during the playoffs. I think the contract was for three years when he was hired -- December 2009, but whether that has an expiration of this summer (probably) or through December 2012, I'm not sure. All signs indicate that he'll be returning.

He needs to stay, even if they don't make the cup this year

Yes, switching up a coach on this young roster could be bad.

I have to say, I love everything about Lavi. His style, his intensity, his knowledge/strategy, his ability to troll the other team/media. He's got a swagger about him that I can't remember from a flyers coach in a long time.

All that said, coaches of his style don't typically have a long shelf life with teams. I thought it seemed players were already starting to toon him out last season. The big turnover in the roster I think changed that this season, but at some point I think that will start to seep back in and it will be time to part ways.

I agree...he most likely won't finish whatever extension he gets. Hitchcock got one and was gone that same year...same with Stevens. Lavi with this group has maybe 1 or 2 years....but my guess 1.5.....

given the way they played Tuesday night, I'd venture his contract status is "one step closer to the shredder than it was on Monday"

Yet again, where is the list of available coaches who could do better?

obviously with some people players are responsible for the wins, coaches for the losses.

I really don't see how you can't bring Lavi back. Great coach, brought the team to the SCF 2 years ago. This year I'd say we've played above what was expected considering the giant make over, we already beat the cup champions of this year, pittsburgh. I'd say it's a no brainer to bring him back for another 3 year contract once the playoffs are done.

The job he did this year has been under appreciated. Took an entire new team filled with rookies and free agent signings and led them to the 6th best record in the NHL. He also had to deal with significant injuries throughout the year. The team certainly had their ups and downs but they remained pretty consistent throughout the year.

Definitely deserved a nomination IMO but the others were deserving. Hitchcock and Maclean definitely deserved nominations. Tortorella did a great job but other then Staal for the first half of the season, he didn't really face many serious injuries. The Rangers largely won the division because the Penguins were missing Crosby and we were missing Pronger.

Outside of Holmgren though, I'm not too upset about the rest of the team not getting nominated for any awards.

What is the average life of a coach on a team these days? There are legit and not so legit reasons as to why it is pretty short. Lavi is a good coach but again his style does have a shelf life. Getting new players and youth extended his shelf life but not by much IMO. It won't help him if he also doesn't do a better job of adjusting in the playoffs from series to series. He was excellent in our cup run, avg against Buffalo (Leighton anybody?) last year, horrid against Boston last year, very good against Pitt this year and so far looking average against NJ but only based on the last game where Devils and Brodeur totally counteracted his strategy.....

this team has no concept of how to defend and no concept of how to break out of their own end and no concept how to match their opponents' effort.

other than that they are well-coached.

Yep that's the formula for a team to get to the second round of the playoffs. Honestly people, are we that dumb in here to think Lavy is not a good coach??

EDit: and I see that you made this your comment during this period. Knee jerk reaction
