Idea for resolving ties instead of a shootout.

Its an idea taken from the BCHL junior league. Basically they play 5 minutes of 4 on 4 overtime and, if the game is still tied, another 5 minutes of 3 on 3 overtime. Its lead to far far less ties, yes they still do happen, but I guess the question is, is 3 on 3 really that much different than a shootout?

How about we just give each team a point?

The argument I've heard is that "fans pay to see a winner." The truth is fans don't leave any more contented with an OT loss than they do with a tie. The only way they'll be contented is if their team wins.

I say, 10 min 5-on-5 OT. No point for OT loss. Game ends in a tie? Game ends in a tie.

i have no problem with games ending in ties. I keep hearing that the american audience doesn't want any part of that. I dunno if its just painting all the americans with one stroke of the brush or whether this actually has some merit.

I know that north of the border, this has never been a huge problem.

I used to like the traditional way of overtime and when they introduced 4 on 4... at first I didn't like it. But when teams started to go all out, it was intense and I really loved the 4 on 4, so I wouldn't get rid of it. I like the idea of adding on the shootout to the end, but the topic is well... you know.

I guess the taking away players off the ice until it's 1 on 1 plus goalie might be interesting, but some of the players might be dog tired after an event like that... and it might happen alot to some teams.

I really like the 4 on 4, then shoot out. 3 on 3 might be cool too... but I think once it gets to 2 on 2... with the full ice surface... I think players would get too tired real quick, if they don't score quick.

Maybe have a puck race (like those intermission promo games at centre ice) or just get a goon from each team to face off at centre ice. Winner takes the two points home

I say they fight it out at center ice.

Take team ones tough guy vs team twos tough guy they go at it. Rink side judges determine the winner. If no winner can be declared, send second group of tough guys out there to fight for it. etc. etc until the tie is broken.

I was was thinking about the same thing, but lets spice up the idea a little. Goalies or headcoaches at the center ice.

Unh-unh... full complement brawls. Now that would give the fans some big time entertainment, if that's what they're really looking for. Last man standing wins it for his team.

But seriously, if it really is important to break the ties, and a skill competition of some sort is picked, then shootouts are fine by me. There's a finite amount of playing time you can give in OT during the regular season, but if they take the 4-on-4 format a little bit further by, I dunno, calling penalties for just about everything, allowing just 1 d-man, taking the stick away from the goalie, having no offsides at all, or any of that kind of gimmick, it at least would still allow for some kind of team play to decide.

Wow they took my idea that I came up with 3 years ago. At least one league is smart.

No shootouts, please don't turn the NHL into a gimmick. I have no problem with ties, I would be up for making OT 10 minutes and going back to the old way where if you lose you get nothing, get rid of the point for an OT loss.

It certainly doesn't have any merit with the diehards. This argument in particular came out of Shanahan's summit a few weeks ago.

I think each team should pick one player, and have them don the Sumo Suits from intermission, and sumo wrestle for the two points.

My favorite idea is:

Play 60min If you win - 2pts
lose or tie - 0pts

I was tired of 2 ties being equal to a win and disgusted that 2 overtime losses could equal a win. IMO this is the best solution.

My Idea

Five minutes of five on five sudden death overtime.

Win = One point
Loss=Negative One point
Tie = Zero points

simple.

In a related story, Donald Brashear was spotted in a local Sports Authority trying on a goalie mask.

I can see where you could make that mistake, but he was actually shelving it. Yeah, he works there, now.
