He doesn't. The video goes on to explain why it's boarding but not why it, unlike all the other penalties in the playoffs, deserves a suspension. It is a complete travesty. Without a sentence that starts, "this was more severe than typical boarding because," why even make a video?

At the risk of going off on a political tangent here, what does one have to with the other?

The suspension is really hard to stomach for me. Yes, it was a boarding call - perhaps it could have even been a 5 minute major - but that's all it was. A boarding call.

What next, are players going to get hearings when they get a 2-minute slashing minor?

Only if they play for the Phoenix Coyotes, yes.

You cleared the puck over the glass while in your defensive zone, 3 game suspension.

It's absurd. You get the impression that not even Shanahan understands this ruling, but he's issuing the suspension anyway because he feels somehow obligated.

Meanwhile, Ovechkin's hit doesn't even get reviewed. Not even a $2,500 fine/casual request to stop hitting players in the head.

It's so blatant that you have to laugh.

If we had any kind of serious media we would hear a storm, instead we have borderline tmz reporters who cite ap articles all the time. Not even tmz quality, they at least break stories. Our own beat reporter picked us to lose in 6!

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in this sport. I CANNOT believe he got suspended. The 2 minute minor was fine. Is every single penalty going to end in a suspension? Sure seems like it...

Does anyone care to explain to me how this hit is worse than Dwight King's on Pietrangelo and Hayes' on Rozsival? I just don't ****ing get it.

My favorite part was the explanation as to why it warranted a suspension...

"At 15:55 of the first period, Gabriel Bourque received a 2 minute minor for slashing. This violates this violates rule 61.1 which states: Slashing - Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an opponent, whether contact is made or not. Non-aggressive stick contact to the pant or front of the shin pads, should not be penalized as slashing. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an opponent’s body, the opponent’s stick, or on or near the opponent’s hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play the puck, shall be penalized as slashing. Because of this, Bourque has received a one game suspension."

Am I doing it right?

Ok, I understand this to a point, in the fact the Nashville player was pretty much defenseless, and didn't have much control, if any at all, of his body.

I'm just dissapointed that this gets a game, and apparently Ovechkin still isn't getting just a hearing in general for his hit where he left the ice on the Rangers player and the head was a point of contact? That's where my problem with this comes from.

This is hard to swallow and almost enough to make this team seem "put upon". Shanabans description of boarding was quite eloquent and he would do well as a more serious modern day Peter Puck.

I don't think I disagree with anyone's reaction thus far.

It has nothing to do with anything, because this is NOT the first French socialist President

"This is Brendan Shanahan of the NHL's Department of Player Safety. There was an incident at 11:11 of the third period of the game on April 6, 2012 between the Phoenix Coyotes and the Nashville Predators. As the video shows, Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith plays the puck with part of his stick.

"This is a violation of Rule 63.2, which says, 'A goalkeeper shall not play the puck outside of the designated area behind the net. Should the goalkeeper play the puck outside of the designated area behind the goal line, a minor penalty for delay of game shall be imposed.' This still photograph taken by a Nashville Predator fan with his phone during the game shows that the puck was outside the restricted area."

"We note that the puck was not harmed and was immediately put back into service at the next faceoff, until it was flipped out of play. An adult fan, dressed in Nashville Predators clothes, jumped in front of a father and grabbed the puck, then immediatley put it in his pocket. Video clearly captures the face of the disappointed child.

"The Department of League Safety also has taken into account that Mike Smith has committed this penalty before and likes to play the puck. Also, he has been really good this series. Finally, the phone on which the image was captured was an iPhone second generation, which nobody serious should have any more.

"To recap:

-- Puck played outside the restricted area.

-- Smith is a habitual puck player.

-- Bad iPhone.

-- Violation of the closest-child rule for distribution of a puck that transversed into the spectator's area.

"The Department of League Safety has decided to suspend Mike Smith for 2 games."

Terrible. Looks a lot like an everyday run of the mill boarding penalty.

Why the **** is the league able to hand out a suspension on a minor penalty play? It wasn't even major boarding. Klesla wasn't thrown out of the game. Halishuck was fine.

Ovechkin isn't even getting a hearing!

WHAT IS GOING ON!?

Well with all the hype about how they were going to nail rusty, it had me scared that they would announce it at noon tomorrow and cause a distraction. At least there is 24 hours to cool off and be focused. #freeraffi #freerusty

See - just another episode of the NHL favouring Phoenix. Kesseler should have received at least 25 games for that dangerous hit.

I put the sarcasm emoticon in for those non-coyote fans who might have taken me seriously.

Let's make sure that wherever NBC's cameras land in the audience tomorrow night, there's an unavoidable "F*K Shanahan" sign waiting for them...
